Hi, I'm using Sketchup Pro 8. Is there a way to not have black lines around text? The text is white and at a small scale the text with outlines is hard to read when put into layout. I am working a big box retail...any tips to remove lines? Thanks!

Thanks. Yes it's 3D text with white letters, but I only want it to effect the text not the entire model.

          Hi folks.

Try this to avoid affecting the edges setting for the whole model or wasting time hiding all these edges one by one:

1 - Go to Wire Frame mode.

2 - Select all edges of the text in one operation with a selection window.

          3 - Hide the selection.

4 - Go back to previous mode (shaded or shaded with texture or whatever you were using).

OK, Dave beat me on this one, same idea.

          Just ideas.

IF the issue is 3d text please explain that ๐Ÿ˜’
3d text can be grouped, groups can be given a material/color.
Faces within a group can be given materials/colors etc...
If you don't want the edges to show 'hide' them as explained - obviously if edges and faces are both 'black' there's no issue, unless you have a style set that shows 'line extensions', 'endpoints' etc etc..

I do quite a lot of that kind of thing. In order to avoid grabbing geometry behind the lettering, I've found the quickest way is usually to just deal with them direct. Yes, you can hide all the edges by holding down Shift and dragging the eraser over all the outlines...but it's often quite messy, because there are many very small line segments that are just so easy to miss.

The best way is usually just to select each letter...edges and face...in turn by double-clicking it (with Shift held down for multiple select) then Boolean deselct the faces themselves by clicking on each one once. I never risk then r-clicking and choosing Hide from the context menu, because it's far too easy to miss the line...then you lose the entire selection and have to start over. Much better choosing Hide from the Edit menu.

Sorry, I am very new to sketchup. We are just switching over to sketchup from Viz. Our model is imported from autocad drawn in 3d. We have assigned material/colors to the layers we had set-up from autocad, probably not the best way to do it but we are just starting. Anyway, the issue is signage on the building. The letters are white on a blue background. When the drawing is on a 24x36 layout sheet the white text is not readable (the text is about 26" high). The scale is 1" = 20'.

๐Ÿ‘ ...or use a custom keyboard shortcut for Hide ๐Ÿ˜‰

As 'text' doesn't import from a CAD format these must be 'images' or some sort of non-text block with geometry that simply looks like 'text' ?
Are you saying the text hasn't been made as 3d text but 'imported' from CAD ??
If the 'text' is geometry you can edit it in Sketchup, applying colors etc there as you wish...

                    I'm confused...

Do you have a screen-shot or even a SKP you can share........

                      There is that too. ๐Ÿ˜„

bgrubb, it shouldn't be any problem if you simply hide the outlines. All the pages of signage here were all done exactly as described. Most of it is way less than 26" and as you can see...no problem.
