Oh - the blasted XBox - horrible noisy thing! Can't even watch DVDs with it because it like a freakkin' hurricane. Now - I've heard the new versions should be quieter - but still far from being quiet..

And them pesky ultra-bright LEDs - no, they are NOT cool. I have some on my current desktop computer. I used to have the computer in my bedroom when I lived in London - had to tape electric tape over them as they actually illuminated the whole room quite brightly. x_X

thomthom, do you have a cabinet you could use? What about putting some cabinet doors on a bookshelf?

I have a computer hooked up to my TV so I can watch HULU and some of the shows that the networks have but only on their own website. New internet ready TV? Yes. Freedom to connect to anywhere on the internet? NO! I'm waiting until I move (just bought my first house!) and then see if I can run the equipment out of a closet in the living room to the TV.

I have duct tape on SO MANY of those annoying LEDs! Can't stand them! I've been known to base my decision to buy an item based on those evil lights.

I do have been playing with the idea of making some storage rooms near where the computer is. I live at the top floor - so I got the roof coming down on one side of the living room. Was thinking I might put up some doors there. So that could be an option.

My son's networked tiny-sized hard-drive is a terabyte+, and that never seems it any noise at all... and it's in his bedroom... [before Rich jumps in with a cheap joke - it's full of his music files! (and, there's no 'Jimmy Nail' - that's part of a parallel thread from a separate set of emails... y'radgie-gadgie!)]

All this network stuff is beyond me.

Although I have something in the room that makes an annoying noise. But it also irons and cleans so it's kinda useful.

Would you consider making your own? A selection of high efficiency/low power consumption components and ultra-quiet fans with a Windows or Linux server OS would get you a very, very quiet system that can be continuously expanded to meet your needs. It can also be set up with your preferred RAID or JBOD for speed and redundancy. I built computers for my folks and my wife comp with "green", efficient components and cases that have rubber mounts for drives; compared to my gaming rig they are almost completely silent. Often it can be built more inexpensively than a manufactured NAS.

I have thought of it - and I've done something very similar before. (http://workshop.thomthom.net/minimediacentre/) But I'm at a point where I have too many projects ongoing and I really cannot take on any more. I just want to buy it and be done with it.

Could solid state drives be an option in you NAS? Not sure how much cooling they need.

yes, but I'm not sure if SSD HS's is afforable enough for the size I require.
