      Situation:

      • a group wit 2 subgroups
      • edit a group and hide both subgroups
      • close a group and the group will disappear

How to unhide (recovery) the group?

use the outliner (window-> outliner (on mac at least?))

you can right click on the hidden groups in the outliner then unhide them.

How is this done in Layout? I've been importing different perspectives into Layout and it seems to default back to the groups in the first image that I inserted. Since then I've been copying and pasting after "Send to Layout" off the file menu.

            Thanks ...

It sounds like you aren't making scenes in SketchUp to use for the viewports in LayOut. If you do things the right way, you won't have this problem.

Create scenes in SketchUp of the various views you want to show in LO. Use Layers to control the visibility of groups and components.
When you get to LO, choose the scene you want to use for each viewport from the SketchUp inspector window.
