Draw or place component on curved and twisted surface

Hi all,
How can I draw or place a component or shape on the side of a hull i.e. a curved and twisted surface?
There must be many draftsmen out there placing fenderlines, waterlines etc. on hulls so I sure there is a solution, but failed to find it so far.Best regards
