Best Antivirus? (AVG won't install)
-
I get a "Setup Error"
Code: 0xE001C02D
Message: Recv' Failed
Additional Message: Failed to download files
Context: Initialization of the AVG online installer. And yes I am connected to the internet.

Just a simple first suggestion.
Firewall. Both one you have installed and the standard windows one. -
If everything fails, avast also has a nice, free version for personal use.
-
Microsoft Security Essentials is the best AV out there for free
-
Well I found on their help page a download of the entire install. I can dl it from this machine then install it on the lappy.
I have not heard of MS Security Essentials. How is it better?
-
AVG is heavy on resources and has those annoying ads if you run the free edition.
MS Essentials and ThreatFire are good protection IMO
-
Just personally, I have never had ads from AGV free and it runs quietly in the background for me.
I avoid anything Microsoft or Apple related just on principal.
Plus I keep Malwarebytes free up to date and have never had any problems.
-
Thanks.
I have now installed AVG from the full exe download rather than the online installer. I am now attempting to update it as it is immediately out of date (common) but it hangs up. I have a feeling either their site is experiencing problems or the connection I am getting here at the office is bogus.Edit: Oh and I attempted installing with the online installer and the Windows Firewall disabled with no luck.

MS Essentials integrates with Windows Firewall flawlessly. Another big
-
Thanks Rich.
I heard a while back that AVG and Windows Defender were a perfect combination.
Thoughts? -
I've used Microsoft Security Essentials for my last two laptops, and won't use anything else
-
Microsoft security essentials.
-
I am starting to see a trend.
Thanks again guys for the responses.
Any need for Defender with MS Essentials? -
I use Comodo Internet Security Premium and it's free and have never had a problem.
-
So you are running both AVG and WSE at the same time? Any conflicts?

Oops - the first word "installed" should have said "uninstalled". (I will edit my post.)
I was sick and tired of AVG for lots of reasons. It simply used too much resource by trying to protect me too much.
It has been three years since it found a virus. So I think that other things - Spam filters, Windows itself, etc. are protecting me a lot these days.
-
Earlier this week I uninstalled AVG on my machines and installed Windows Security Essentials. WSE automatically disables Windows Defender, since only WSE is needed.
[Edit: changed installed AVG to uninstalled AVG]
-
+1 for Avast. It doesn't interfere with anything and it has a small footprint.
-
Thanks again guys.

Dont know if it's the best, but good enough and free. Does not use too much resources. I'll recommend!
