Pete, have you downloaded all the content from your existing site? Note that it may be shut of soon (as soon as they arrange the domain transfer). I don't know how you can access that site (and the back-end of it).
-
No I have not, I just signed up, I have not cancelled with Microsoft yet. I'm guessing I have time to build a site this month and by the 21st I can cancel my hosting with them and it should just work.

But Pete, your domain is going to be transferred soon. Can you access the back-end of your current site without the domain? If yes, no problem of course.

Tallbridgeguy, I want to have images, sell models, some tutorial videos, um...that's about it. Maybe a blog, dunno what to blog about, but who knows I may think of something 3D related.
Well, these cms systems come in two, basic flavour: with mainly static pages and/or a blog like system with frequent posts.
The Nova Theme you said you liked is mainly a static looking site with constant things on the home page and the latest posts (I guess in a certain category) only rotating in the slider.
It has a blog part however (which you could even make your front page). I guess you could use this part as a place to constantly add new projects (in case you can share) or similar and leave the static content alone.

Pete, hostmonster typically gives you one free domain registration. I would suggest using your current domain url for a traditional website for commerce and then register a new domain for a wordpress blog.
Both would have unique urls and you can cross pollinate the material. (both work under your current plan.) Bonus having your work in multiple places plus you can use the wordpress postings on sketchucation instead of photobucket.
The blog would be a great place to show your process, work (which is fantastic) and give customers a great place to see WIP.

Very important;
- Before you do anything, back up everything you currently have. Download all images and copy all text if you do not have a simple FTP access (your current site is not that difficult).
- Send an email to all current work contacts that you are transferring your site and domain and until everything is set up correctly, they should be able to contact you via a different email adress.
This is important as it may take some time (even a couple of days) until an existing domain is transferred correctly and all the rest of the internet "gets used to it" (don't ask what this means)

Reading this on and off all day. Why not combine forces and help Pete out? He does so much for everyone around here. We could have a 'Solosplace Testdrive' thread kinda like that other one
-
Like when I talk to my dog and he does not understand, he tilts his head to the left, I'm doing the same thing right now.
Huh!? but what now, how do I download all my images without doing it one by one? I can access my gallery and see them all but no way to download them all, I tried backing up to disk in a .olp file (wtf) and it failed.

Then do that... Don't lose them again.
Did you not get an ftp access to your site when you signed up?@unknownuser said:

What do you think we are doing? I even offered him to install and get his site up and running once he does the paperwork.

I'd take that offer Pete before you go any further
-
I belive my pathetic plea for help implied my acceptance of that very kind offer.
-
Okay, I have a cpanel, lots of stuff with names that mean nothing to me, so... what now, how do I start? do I install wordpress? I'm all thumbs.
-
Step away from cpanel...you want to secure all your original website data first!
TNameservers for a domain name are specialized servers that translate the domain name into an IP Address that is understood by computers on the internet. Each domain name registration includes a listing of nameservers that can answer for that domain name. Normally you should not need to change these from the default nameservers setup by HostMonster.Com. If your domain name is not currently pointing to our nameservers, in order for your domain name to work with this hosting account, you will need to either:
(a) transfer your domain name to use our registrar, or
(b) configure the nameserver settings at the domain's current registrar to point to our nameservers:s

Time for a coffee
What a beautiful community of helpers we have ‘‘ Lucky Pete -
Don't confuse him. This should be dealt with by his new host.
-
Phew!! carpal syndrome...every image is downloaded one by one.
Now what?
-
Now wait till your new host sets up your account and transfers the domain.
The whole transition may take a couple of days so do as I suggested and notify your current clients about this temporary interval during which they may need to contact you via an alternate email address.
-
huh???
What do you mean? I have not cancelled anything or done anything besides subcribe, I do not want to migrate that shitty site, I wanna create a new one and use my url.
-
Yes Pete, but your domain will point to your new place once they processed your order. This is what those name servers are for.
Imagine that you have a street address somewhere and your name on the door.
Now when you move to a different place, your street address will change but you get your name label off the door and nail it to your new home.Earch web space has an address. It is called an IP address. Your current webspace has a certain address and the one you have just subscribed to (and got them to get your domain there as well) has a different IP.
Those name servers work as a telephone directory - allow browsers to find a certain iP address by name. So once they have processed the move of your domain, it will point to your new webspace. Setting up an email address there is easy and quick but there still may be some time until you do it so this is just a precaution.
If you do not understand what I am saying, just do how I suggest (you must trust me - after all we shared a room at BaseCamp and you came out virgin - I think at least)

SCRATCHING HEAD FULL OF GREY HAIR
Okay, so that we are on the same page let me explain what I have done so far...
I signed up with hostmoster, using solosplace.com as my domain name, I downloaded every image from my site and put it in a folder, ready to send it to my new FTP when I get to actually building my new site.
That's all, I have not done anything else, so you are saying hostmonster will grab my domain and host it without me cancelling with microsoft? how will I know they have it and when can I start building the site? why is my head about to explode?
I thought I could build my site and then when done flip a switch and tada!! all done live and happy. Why is website crap so complicated?
