I've v1 so I'm not too bothered with the v2 differences. They haven't made a sizable leap to merit upgrading but if you're considering purchasing I'd recommend getting the v1 refurbished from the apple site.

V3 will be take badboy I think. But as tablet wars rage iPad is still king. Except for that goddamn flash issue πŸ˜’

Yeah I may hold out for one of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets. Specs and looks wise they match the i-pad mk2 plus have flash, removable memory and USB's. Will have to see how they turn out and what the prices will be.
But your right the Mk3 i-pad will be pretty special I would imagine!

I think v2 is lovely- especially in white, but I do think Rich has got a point worth considering. And I also agree that iPad 3 will be a rocking product (A9 chip, SD slot? πŸ˜• ). But then again, perhaps it won't? You can never tell with Apple. One things for sure though, Apple really know how to get us to open our wallets! πŸ˜’

The only good thing about V2 is it lowers the price of V1

As a handheld video guy I am more excited about the changes coming to iMovie for iOS (much more control and multi-track audio) and Garageband for iOS. It's all about the apps these things run rather than the devices themselves.

I think flash is a big dificiency in 1 and 2. I have V1 but like you Liam might consider the Honeycomb.... πŸ‘

Do you really think that not having Flash is a big deficiency? Why? I don't miss flash one bit.

I think Pete is right about the one major thing is that v2 will make v1 a lot cheaper- and that's a good thing. But perhaps it's what Apple were hoping for? Read this article about the iPad's user interface. Not to mention what 10.7 Lion has to offer. For a start Apple are including their entire server suite built into the next 10.7 update!

It not a big deal to me either Tom but it is the only thing missing and hence, a feature that competition will exploit.... til now we have only had the iPad as a 'real' option.... I guess we'll see what consumers think of no flash option as apposed to the android products.

I have been looking at tablets lately from the perspective of using it as a portable painting device for use with Corel Painter.
Found this video relating to the new Asus Ep121 Slate which is quite interresting:

Interesting stuff, still not useful for full scale illustration but for sketching on the go etc its a good option. Shame about no programmable shortkeys etc but other than than pretty nice. Still have my eyes on a cintiq will have to save up the pennies however...

I have been using an iPad 1 off and on since they came out.

They are a very different computer. My wife liked it because instead of sitting behind her at the computer and watching TV, I would browse the net alongside her. I would take it all around the house, playing Pandora, using it as an instruction sheet while I upgraded a computer and so on. Today I used a nifty app to take notes while it was recording the audio and keeping a time stamp between the two (you can click on a word and the audio immediately jumps to the audio from when you wrote the word). It was very cool, low key and given that I was only typing key words I could better follow the conversation better versus concentrating on just transcribing. It was intended for students but what a great note taking tool for anyone who does this regularly.

I am likely to actually buy one of this new generation as it would allow me to give my kids a tool that is a very capable computer, a camera, a video camera, a gaming machine and have to buy the software only once across all of the units I buy (likely three). Given how much money I have spent on DS games and so on over the years I suspect I would have saved money had the App store model been around a few years earlier. I know the iPod touch's have replaced the DS with my kids.

I think Apple has really hit on something with the App store for both Mac OS X machines and the App store for IOS, easy to access software, immediate delivery (gratification), use and reasonable licensing terms.

Back to the new one. Its definitely going to be better. Would I like the thing to be faster, have better cameras etc etc? Sure. But having looked at the Motorola and Samsung alternatives, I am definitely underwhelmed by the competition. Its about the software more than it is the hardware at this point in my view. The iPad has the software and the hardware is high quality and the integration between the two makes for a remarkable experience.

I created Dilbertville, sorry about that...

I looked at the Asus EP121, like you suggested and it does look like a nice piece of kit, but it's still windows on a tablet! And for that price, I may as well buy a laptop of some kind.

The iPad is relatively new, but there are over 65,000 applications for it already, all of which have been generated in the space of a year (give or take the iPod/Phone applications). I'm already rather impressed on how different types of pencils and brushes are being developed for the iPad, and I'm more than impressed with its touch capabilities- that far outweigh any windows-based cash register of old! I've also got my kids to think about, and the iPad as a tool for interaction with children in the classroom.

                                'Fanboy and proud' I guess? 😳 πŸ˜†

You've hit the nail on the head there Liam. Programmable shortkeys should already be available in a touch product! It is obviously the whole point of a touch product, right? This really highlights the exact problem with software that has initially been developed for Windows with a mouse interface. Yes it's up to the developers to add these into the software, but why bother if a hardware solution is available already- like a separate peripheral? A mouse for eg, or a separate USB interface? Or even as in the Cintiq. built into the hardware with drivers that are installed on bootup?

My 5 year old is obsessed with Autodesk's Sketchbook for iPod (mouse not needed- at all!). I'll have to pry my iPad out of her cold dead fingers! 😲 Did anyone notice the blatant advertising at the Apple iPad 2 keynote speech by Jobs for Autodesk? Autodesk were the only company who were mentioned! No mention of Brushes, the app so beloved by David Hockney! I wonder how much Autodesk paid Apple for that tiny (mega!) bit of advertising? πŸ˜’ πŸ˜†

Now that I am working for a publishing company I have seen how much people pay for ads and its ridiculous, some go into the hundreds of thousands PER ISSUE so no doubt it was considerable!!!

Just to let you know Liam, that today I followed Pete Solo's advice and bought a mint condition 64gb iPad v1, with 3G too, off eBay for a mere Β£325!!! That's over Β£300 off the price of these things only a month ago. 😲 I also think the way Apple trends go, it won't be long before I can sell this off before the iPad 3 comes out, for the same price (ish).... We shall see! πŸ˜‰

Good move Tom. Apple stuff holds value well. I got my v1 in Boulder last Sept. The main reason I got it was after seeing Sketchers Walk at 3D Basecamp and NOW there is no sign of Sketchers Walk being launched!!! Maybe Google gobbled it up????
