Make Unique causes texture to jump
-
I'm trying to adopt smart modeling practices, and one of those smart practices is to reduce the file size of my textures. To that end I am making textures unique after applying to a face. BUT -- when I do so the texture jumps to the right a bit, not much but enuf to be noticeable. After all the careful positioning of the texture, this is very frustrating and disappointing . Any ideas what might be causing this, and more importantly, how can I stop this from happening?

I noticed that too. What is interesting is this: the texture stretches only to right! Is not axis-dependent! So, the effect is the same if I paint a face inside a component, or is raw geometry.
I tried to rotate the geometry, painted the opposite face, but always the stretching goes to right. Not much, but a little.
And what is more interesting, is the texture is a little bigger than the face. See the pins in printscreen

And if you keep making it unique, it keeps jumping to the right, more and more. It's not a one-time deal. Very strange, I hope someone here has the solution to this problem.

I don't have the answer to the rescaling of the material but why is it you are making textures unique after applying them? I've never noticed any rescaling but I almost never need to make a material unique.

Making a texture unique does have its purposes as well its place. Most of the time however you do not make textures unique (unless you are modelling for GE "most of the time").
I also noticed this however.

Speaking for myself, I do it to decrease the file size.

How does that decrease file size? Every time you make a material unique you add another image file to the In Model materials library? How does increasing the number of image files in the model decrease the file size?
-
It does decrease the file size, it trims all the extra texture that isn't actually on your model, just hanging out there in space in case someday you want to reposition your texture. For example, by making the texture unique in a simple car floor mat the texture size went from 122k to 24k. When you use a lot of textures it becomes a big factor, at least for me.

Hellnbak, I'm guessing that you make it unique, but do not keep a copy of the original somewhere in the model, right? That will in fact decrease the model size, if you are clipping out large unused portions of a material, then purging the original material out of a model.

Dave, you are mostly modelling woodworking stuff I guess, with tileable textures that do not need making unique (or if you do make unique textures, they will indeed increase file size).
However when working for GE for instance and you take a picture of a building with a lot of its surrounding, making unique can indeed be useful to crop the unnecessary areas and that will decrease file size (IF you get rid of the original indeed).
SketchUp's make unique does not only jump a little (you can always reposition the material if that is an issue) but makes a horrible job when it comes to antialiasing. So the best workflow is to
- work with large photos
- make unique
- edit texture image to resample to something decent and do the final AA in your image editor.

It looks like a "must be fixed" thing... maybe google guys will hear about it.

They keep hearing about it...
