I've downloaded and studied videos, I've searched all over for info, but I just can't seem to create a basic dome. They just won't "extrude" properly when using the follow me tool. Several times I did get it to go almost completely around, but it wouldn't close and the top looked weird. If I don't figure this out I'm going to shoot my dog.

Select the circle (edge or face.. Doesn't really matter in this instance)
        Choose the follow me tool
        Click on the profile face

Do those steps exactly and your dome will be created

You seem to be using the PushPull tool instead of the Follow me tool

(Start with image 2 and just click on circle face with the select tool then pick the Follow me tool and click on that quarter circle with it)

No, I was using the follow me tool, I just wasn't selecting the circle outline first (doh!). Now I have another question - when I make the shape as shown, it doesn't become a surface, any idea why?

You need to close it and get it co-planar.

From here I am not sure if there is an edge on the blue axis. If there is and all edges are closed then your polyline may not be coplanar.

Never mind, I figured it out. As always, thanks so much for your help.

Unfortunately I figured it out too late to save my dog. I will accept donations towards the lavish funeral I'm planning.
