I recently down loaded sketchup 8, and after doing so I immediatly removed SU7, now I can't open any of my drawings that I made with SU7??? Is there something I need to change so I can open my drawings, surely I don't have to redraw all of them. I'm running Windows 7 home premium 32 bit edition. any help will be appreciated, Thanks

        Hi Rick,

Normally there should not be any problem. SU 8 should nicely open SU 7 files. There MUST be something wrong with your system.

Can you otherwise launch SU and start a new model?
Can you save it and re-open?

How do you try to open your older files? Double clicking or opening from the File menu in SU? Try all variations, please.

          Hi Gaieus,

I Think I got it figured out. I did a system restore back to before I downloaded SU8, then redownloaded SU8, and kept SU7 (which I got back with the restore). Now if I open SU8 than close it, my old files that were drawn with SU7 now open in SU8.

Now my question is, do I have to keep SU7 in my computer? Thats were I went wrong the last time. When I removed SU7, I could no longer open any old files. SU8 worked fine and could start a new model, and then reopen it. just couldent open old models that were made with SU7. When 7 was removed, no files showed up in the menu of SU8. The only way I could try to open them was by clicking on them in there folders, and then I would get the "what program do you wish to open this file with" pop-up.

When you 'open' a SKP it will open with v8 through Windows by right/double-click or from a Windows file-browser.
If you open v7 and then use its menu item to 'open' the SKP it will open in v7 IF it is compatible - if you saved it in v8 it won't open in v7 UNLESS the last save you did was a 'Save_As' and choose v7 as the file type...
If you right-click and use 'open-with' v7 will probably be the second app' on the list.
Another way to open a SKP in v7 is to 'drop' the SKP's icon onto the v7 SUp icon [shortcut] on your desktop - it will then open in v7 if it's compatible...
It used to be that a SKP opened in the last version of the SUp that you have used but with the arrival v8 it sticks in v8 even if you just has v7 opening a SKP!

It seems that (only) some file associations went wrong. In this case, you could have just right clicked on an skp file, go to Properties and define the path to SU 8 (instead of the removed SU 7).

Whether to leave it or keep it... You can of course keep it, no harm. Especially if you use the free version, keep it as the plugin that was provided for dwg/dxf import for v.7 no longer works in v.8.

Also, georeferencing (GE snapshot) is completely different in v.8 and you may want to keep v.7 to be able to grab a rotated view for instance...
