This App might be a good reason to get an iPad!

Asus already have a Tablet PC available that can do this. It's the Asus Eee PC T91. The screen flips around and folds back down onto the keyboard. It has multi touch with palm rejection.
It runs Windows 7 and has 2 Gig of RAM so should manage sketchup fairly well.I'm not suggesting it for major jobs, but certainly for quick onsite drawings and presentation and such it would be ideal.
And it's a normal laptop as well, without being locked into the Apple world if you don't want to be.

Well, the only concern with an Eee would be the rather low CPU and the lack of a dedicated video card. These two are essential for SU although surely for some quick sketching on-site (with HW acceleration off), it can be still handy.

I agree, that's why I said not for major use.
I think the iPad would have some serious limitations too.

Definitely would. I keep reading all those feature requests for SU for iPad but no-one seems to think about this issue (while some even have HW problems with desktops, not to speak about notebooks).

yeah, i just can't see the point of it. its like a laptop, but not really.
I am 100% sure they can make it much faster....but knowing apple they will bring out the faster/more memory version in a couple of months and charge extra for it. It's like they bring out "detuned" products.

I was curious so I installed SU7 on my older netbook, it runs perfectly.
Could someone suggest a model I could download that would "test" it's abilities.

The Asus Eee PC T91 looks to be a nicely designed unit. I have a 2 year old Eee PC which I use occasionally when traveling and doing Win stuff. Here are a couple of reviews on the T91,

I had a play with an iPad last month while attending a meeting. One of the attendees had one she got in the US. I was impressed with the thinness of it.
BTW, I'm upgrading to an Apple Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.66 i7 / 4GB / 500GB HD / nVidia GT 330M - 512MB . It works out at €1,693 ex VAT but I can claim the VAT back. I probably will slot in 2 x 4GB memory chips at around €300 later on. I should have it towards the end of next week. I have a guy taking my old MB Pro 2.4 for €700, so not a bad deal overall. Over three year computing on a MacBook Pro for around a €1,000
Maybe that's called 'mental masterbation'

Thanks Gaieus, I replied with the results in that thread, it is pretty slow, but I works for onsite and simple presentation purposes.
Mike, I will probably end up with one in the nearish future, mainly for other work uses, I'll update how well it works then.

Recently had a hands-on with friends iPad. Not overly impressed at the moment. Now with the iPhone 4 using same A4 processor it's even harder to justify the iPad.
Like Oli says, Apple will release a revised version for Xmas with probably a v2 in the new year.
Nice app all the same but does it merit purchasing?
Although email,web,photos and books on the iPad are gorgeous!

I think we all know it's really a luxury purchase for most of us.
I really cannot see why I would need one or how I would use it, but I would still like one. It could be an expensive gimmick.
I was surprised when I checked it out in the Apple store how many older people where playing with it (55+). It could be a good option for people who want to enter the computer market for mainly internet use with the added bonus of being cool
Certainly better off waiting for version 2 though in my opinion. -

I recently sat down with a fisheries scientist who is an expert on the climate change effect on salmon. He is 85 years old, and loves his ipad. Because he is still in the loop in his field, he receives all his papers and technical documents on it. Not only can he read them, but he says he's not tied to his computer.
I can understand this, but for me, I just can't see the fit. -
