I was absolutely convinced the colours were different in the examples....I even took screenshots-but they are the same!! the rubiks cube example just melts my brain! the colours appear completely different! aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Here's another one - it explains a bit about these types of optical illusions http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/beau_lotto_optical_illusions_show_how_we_see.html

Back in the early 80s when I was in Fine Art school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I was shown a series of hand painted cards that showed the color illusions very well. The name of the artist who painted them escapes me but it was a powerful thing to see.

Jasper Johns played with color illusions a lot.
One of his more famous is an american flag that was green, orange, and yellow. Stare at it for a few minutes and then stare at a white wall and you'll see the red, white, and blue.
Perception is as close to reality as our brains can get

Josef Albers.... classic art school and fine art training. If you have access to the originals or a hand printed copy - they are incredible.
