"Are you Sketchup 7.1 Pro" - eh? why yes...

I got the same message on my work machine today!
Chris
Architectboy is the author of skin.rb. He went missing for some time, but is back now. He posted in his skin thread in the plugins forum.

That's Darrel of the Skin.rb
-
Yes, sorry. It was really a long time ago.
-
lol, yes, I'm back. Hopefully to stay for a while.
-
I think we all got the same message......
And welcome back ArchitectBoy!!!
-
Wow... oh the memories... It's been nearly a year and a half since I was active here, back when I was a home schooled 15 year old. Just looking through this forum I realize how much I have grown since then! Now I'm a 17 year old college student with a full load headed for a career in structural engineering. And I'm glad to be back! You guys are so welcoming!
-
Clever boy for 15 years, mate. keep up the ruby writing; you have a talent!!!!
So does that mean you re-register as 'EngineerBoy'?
-
So ... what's your next plugin then?
-
Yes, welcome back Darrel and best of luck with your structural engineering course. You may also do a course in Architecture as you are very young and brainy so leave the name alone
Mike
PS: I got that message today when opening SU, don't understand it!
-
OK - this is all rather obscure (and no doubt interesting to those that know!), but going back to ThomThom's original question, what is this "are you using Sketchup-pro" pop-up all about?

Sketchup probably has a .dll or some other little thing buried in it to communicate with google to check for updates, especially if your computer, like most, is already linked by cable or otherwise to a network on boot-up.
That message is probably sent out on udp-ip to "subscribers" when prompted by your program "phoning home". If your system is properly protected, this is generally speaking, no problem. -
I received the message, too (I'm a Pro user, updated to the most current version) - clicked on the "Download" button, closed the web page, closed SU Pro, then re-opened SU and no message. It must be just an automatic tickler - a pain for Pro users, but that's all.

I did notice that my SU now opens about 20 seconds faster than it used to. I can't help but feel like it is related to this. Anyone else notice anything similar?

Isn't that you already started SU once before? It's cached in your RAM.

I don't think so. sketchup on my work computer used to take up to 45 seconds to start after I opened it. It is now down to a reasonable 5 to 10 seconds. (though at home it is almost instantaneous).
So even when I had opened it once before, and then re-opened it, it still took over 30 seconds to start. But that seems to be largely cleared up recently.
