There's a similar thread about making 'grooves' - I illustrated how to do it with my Lattice-izer tool... You draw the pattern [any] over a face in a group and then lattice-ize it, at the required +ve width & -ve depth and the wall faces pop forward leaving the grooves in place...

Protude and Windowizer can do that.
Try to set negative values in fields for extrude
in windowizer.
