Double Standards by Apple?
-
Guys,
I've just picked up this information on iClarified.
Apple News | Sexually Explicit Apps Are No Longer Allowed?
*Apple has started removing applications from the App Store which contain "overtly sexual content".
Yesterday Jon Atherton, the developer behind Wobble iBoobs reported to TechCrunch receiving an e-mail from Apple indicating that his application was being removed from the App Store because of a new policy change.*
and
Apple News | Apple is Now Allowing Lottery-Style iPhone Apps
*Apple has modified the iPhone SDK terms to allow lottery-style applications, according to RegHardware.
Previously, lottery applications were limited to the display of winning numbers or were forced to open Safari to process transactions. Now a change in the iPhone SDK allows lotteries and sweepstakes to be embedded directly into an application.*
So it looks to Apple that its okay to have gambling apps on the iPhone but no sex stuff! I think on-line gambling is a far bigger problem than on-line sex stuff but again I suppose there is more bucks in that gambling for apple.
What do you think?

I have issues with Apple and their policies in this regard. They always try to have too much control, and generally end up messing things up.
A while back the SouthPark TV show tried to make an app, and they were shut down twice because of potentially offensive content.
Of course, iTunes gladly sells their music, so Apple is willing to make a profit it off them over there, but wouldn't let them make a silly app.
http://www.tvsquad.com/2009/02/23/apple-says-screw-you-guys-to-south-parks-iphone-app/
And these stories go on and on.
Another way an app that got approved and was working nicely. I think it was an mp3 player. Apple shut them down because they said they already had an app that did that - iTunes for the iphone.
So what is to stop Apple from using that logic for ANY software? Like this logic - Wow that xyz app is cool, and sells a ton! Hmm, we hae a barely related app that we make, we could just develop it into that other person's awesome app, then shut them down because we now have an app that does that....
Apple is a frightening company in my mind.
This is a list of blog entires about "iPhone app" from my all time technology blog - Techdirt:

Plenty of good reading there on the double standards and odd practices by Apple and their iPhone.

An entry about iPhones browser can access Sun's page 3, but if another App does it, it is not acceptable....

Here's the full shakedown, as recapped by the developer of Wobble, an individual who has been standing in the shower since Apple first turned on the cold water on Thursday night:
1. No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either) 2. No images of men in bikinis! (I didn't ask about Ice Skating tights for men) 3. No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry) 4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes โ I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic) 5. No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex โ all banned 6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing!! (I doubt many people could get aroused with the pic above but those puritanical guys at Apple must get off on pretty mundane things to find Wobble "overtly sexual!) 7. No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but โฆ)

NO! THEY TOOK OUT IBOOBS!
I guess its for the best, I mean kids these days are having a lot of Ipods. I even saw a kid with that app! -
Standards vs. no standards = some standards. Problem becomes who decides and how they decide. Well, maybe not a "problem", but a "process" that takes too long to adjust, and too slow to reflect changing social norms.

Last I heard, we're all waiting for a global standard.
Do you want 3d glasses with that sir? -
I guess if you already have an Apple removed App though, it stays on your iphone?
What you don't want is on the next sync with iTunes, it disappears!

Just answered my own question.
Synced my iPhone and iWobble is still there! -
I really have to laugh at these silly standards that many American companies implement. Anything that involves 'skin' is out BUT its okay to have 'games' that involve chopping heads off and worse.
%(#0000BF)[Iphone Release - Killing Field (games)
ITEM FUNCTIONS
Bloodlust- Accelerates the warriorโs attack and movement speed.
Potion โ Boosts up the warriorโs worn out physical energy.
Bomb โ When in emergency situations or besieged by monsters, pop this bomb to do collateral damage to enemy.]They should really take a good look at themselves and get priorities right. Personally I would much prefer to see a boy showing his friends iBoobs on his iPhone rather than some game that involves killing and maiming. Hey, what ever happened to 'Make Love Not War!'
I suppose it must go back to the Apple policy makers upbringing, probably some some kind of archaic Christian religious beliefs. Steve does look a bit puritanical ..... but again so did Tiger!
To diverse a little. I found Tiger's recent activities quite amusing. I also thought it was a matter between him and his wife / family. I can't see where he broke any laws except possibly agreements between him and his wife. Then again maybe his commercial contracts had 'squeaky clean image' stipulations!
In my opinion his public apology a few days ago was pathetic. It was, I imagine, aimed at his sponsors and no one else. I would have had more respect for him if he told the media to 'hump' (excuse the pun) off and continued to play golf, after all his IS No.1. He is now in the pathetic situation of having his 'squeaky clean' image in tatters and is a joke and worse still, will remain a joke because of his back tracking.
The latest one I heard was yesterday. 'What has Brian Cowen (Irish Taoiseach / Prime Minister) and Tiger Woods got in common? Answer: Their 'willies' got the in trouble. Recently William (Willie) O'Dea our Minister for Defense had to resign because he was caught out telling lies to the High Court.

they subscribe to the Zardoz philosophy...
the Gun is Good.. the Penis is evil...
-
That philosophy is rife in America, see the standards that Walmart impose as an example, soldier of fortune magazine is good, FHM is bad.

I think you are both spot on. I also think Apple are more than aware of conservative middle America. It only takes one whiff something someone decides as vaguely dodgy, and there is witch hunt on, except this time it isn't flaming crosses, it's flaming apples!
But yes- it's a double standard. Ridiculous really.

Our American cousins always leave me in a state of confusion. While appearing to be a deeply religious country it is also a country that produces vast quantities of "adult entertainment" videos that end up on the internet? (Adult entertainment, a euphemism for pornography)

I live down the road from a Baptist church/campus (It's like a christian theme park complete with Starbucks, clothing and bookstores, restaurants etc, which happens to be down the road from a Hooters. On sundays at midday you cannot get a seat at Hooters as it's full of baptists "breaking bread" after church.
-
What always gets me is that theres several life times worth of porn just a click away via safari yet apple try and stop explicit content in other peoples apps, its madness!

The Hypocrisy of Christians knows no bounds! I can say that because i was raised as a fire and brimstone baptist racisist hate monger myself! -- thank God intelligence stepped in and i now think for myself and believe in true freedoms for all!
If i had a choice (when i was a young lad) between boobs[1] and death match games ,well i would take both and a double dose on Sundays, these are things that are interesting to boys. And for crying out loud how else you gonna learn? And to those "self proclained" "mother of the year" types; NEWS FLASH! your little "Johnny" is into far more than you could ever imagine!
Q: Whats next, forcing scantily clad women with big hooters to wear tighter bras so no one see's a jiggle. The women that complain about this are the very same pig nose gossip hounds who are just jealous because their "flap-jacks" are not as perky!
I can you tell you guys that sometimes a little "jiggle" can make a mans "bad day" into a "wonderful day". I know there is a God, not because some book tells me so or because some sleazy preacher wearing three thousand dollar suits and gold rings on every finger playing into the greed and vainity of gullible "sheeple" spouting "lusty descriptors" like "pearly gates" and "streets paved with gold", but because of all the god **** beautiful T&A i see on a daily basis!!! Thank God for double D's!
[1]of course i'm not referring to explicit pron, i'm referring to the wobble boobs
