Ipad
-
Been looking to seeing this and I'm not disappointed so far. Superb price range and choice.
Alot of bang for your buck if you ask me.
But one major issue....
-
The problem is most folk had high expectations of a new gadget to replace an old one, this is not to replace the ipod, iphone, imac, etc. This is to kill the Kindle, this is for casual internet browsers, subscription readers (watch how magazines and newspapers turn internet subscription based now), Kindle was black and white, this is color.
The Ipad is great IMO, for what it's intended for, wanna a graphics tablet? then get a Wacom Clique. -
Watch how Itunes will now offers Wired magazine, Cosmopolitan, Wall street journal, etc This will do for pulp media what it did for cd's.
-
If it ain't broken, don't try to fix it ...

I find this new Apple technology quite disappointing.
Indeed like others I was hoping for an innovative small form-factor net-tablet. On the pro and plus-side, no question it's interesting - size, keyboard-docking & Bluetooth are all good. OTOH, its has closed and limited computational capabilities, no multitasking and despite an over-sized iPhone/Touch it offers no support for 'regular' Mac OSX apps. Bottom line for me, I am definitely left wanting and hoping for iPad v. 2.
Cheers,
. Diego .
maybe you want this instead?
buy it! nowhttp://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Modbook

Methinks Apple's gonna get rich from repairing dropped Ipads

i dunno, one of the main things this tablet is aimed at is our traditional paper_medium content delivery.. you gotta admit that the internet pretty much broke that setup
-
Really, an A4 sized touch screen is good enough.
BUT WHY A HUGE IPOD?!?!?!?!

I agree and that's been historically a fine definition for innovation or for any or most new technologies. If your expectations are met, you're of course welcome to it - I'm happy for you man! Mine weren't: the or my problem is I was hoping Apple would address innovation other than it did. The iPad is neither a net-book (in the sense that it doesn't have comparable computational capabilities of the likes of an Asus, HP, or Dell) or a tablet (despite it's touch-functions).
The point remains - Apple has not addressed that niche- they've not yet developed a technology that fills the fine sweet spot between the input/display/comm and then-some capabilities of the iPhone/Touch and the portability and processing powers of a laptop. The iPad is indeed a fine color media-player/comm device but it remains limited (still, IMO) as a tablet-computer. Plus, I'm sure you agree, a Cintiq is a display/input device that requires to be tethered to a computer; these are not comparable technologies. Too bad, isn't it? As I said, I hope for version 2.
Cheers,
. Diego .

BUT WHY A HUGE IPOD?!?!?!?!
You know, the one thing that really annoys me about my iPhone, is that the screen is too small. But if it were any larger, it would be impractical as a phone. But then again, with 3G, I could still communicate with the iPad, in say a shoulder bag, via a bluetooth earphone, using Skype or AIM. Problem solved! When I first bought my iPod Touch (it was secondhand when I got it- my wife now has that), I went into the Apple store in Birmingham, and told them that if only the screen was three times bigger, the Touch would be 300x better. I agree with Pete, the iPad is going to do really well- especially at that price.
PS, my next PC will still be a Mac Mini. But I'll get an iPad next (and a Leica M9!!)

What gets me is the knee jerk reaction from everyone, all the blogs are going and it's mostly negative...
Just breaking is "Apple has launched its own bookstore called iBookstore" never saw this coming
So... the ipad is a better Kindle, that's all.
Apple noticed how well the Kindle was doing, so they made a better one.
They still sticking with AT&T sadly.
So it's all about expectation, nope Apple did not reinvent the wheel, just upped the Kindle and other e-readers.

Methinks ten's of product designers, from around the world (but mainly the far east ) are going to get rich from making 'fabulous' protective cases for the iPad (and then flogging them on eBay )

Yes, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about AT&T from people in the States. O2 was pretty crap in this country, but O2 have improved (a little), and best of all, Vodaphone now sell iPhones (Vodaphone have the best network in the UK, IMHO). The iPad will be unlocked, so you can choose whatever carrier you wish, so it can't be too bad?

iirc, apple & at&t had and exclusivity arrangement which expires this summer (?).. after that, you should be able to use an iphone with verizon, sprint, tmobile etc..
the ipad though doesn't have this type of deal so you can use it with any carriers that offer microSIMs
(one cool thing about the at&t/ipad connection however is that there's no contract.. pay 15 bucks for one month only if you so choose etc..)[edit] note my use of italics with 'should' up there.. that's meant to imply that i don't have a clue about the future of iphone and other carriers.. basically just trying to remember what i thought would happen in a couple of years __ a couple of years ago

ha.
fwiw, about waiting for ipad 2.0.... i'm not so sure 2.0 will give you what you're wishing for but maybe a little further down the line?..

In my opinion its a dammed good idea, it fills the gap between proper laptop and smart phone, and to the best of my knowledge nothing does this very well at the moment.
I have no doubt that processing power and such will increase with time and given a couple of years it seems fairly reasonable that you could be running straight os x apps on it (or at least apps that are similarly powerful and diverse.)

Found online, says it all.

The Kindle DX is the same size as the iPad. It has a black and white E-Ink screen, 4 gigabytes of internal storage, 3G access and costs $489. Meanwhile, the cheapest version of the iPad has a full-color touch screen, a powerful processor and graphics chip, 16 gigabytes of flash storage, Wi-Fi and sells for $499.

You gotta love the enthusiasm of the Senior Hardware VP
Must say that i'm really impressed by the iPad's capabilities. I've been an iPhone user since launch and curently use 3GS for all my needs. The iPad will hopefully be a welcome addition. I'm watching closely the see what kinda Apps developers will create before i consider purchasing.
But with all new tech it's greeted differently depending on your taste and interests. I like to read the 'No Camp' opinions as some valuable points are being made.
Keep up the great debate

supposedly, you will be able to do some of that immediately..
iWork (maclike versions of excel, word, and powerpoint) has already been written for it..
i use iWork for estimating, job tracking, and presentations and really, they take a bit of power to run ok so if the ipad can handle some of my spreadsheets ok then i'm sold.[ *imagining keynote (powerpoint) presentations being projected from an ipad/gestures instead of a laptop/mouse/trackpad.. ]
