Really, an A4 sized touch screen is good enough.

      BUT WHY A HUGE IPOD?!?!?!?!

Getting the perfect sig is hard...

      Google it!

        Hi Solo,

The problem is most folk had high expectations of a new gadget to replace an old one...

I agree and that's been historically a fine definition for innovation or for any or most new technologies. If your expectations are met, you're of course welcome to it - I'm happy for you man! Mine weren't: the or my problem is I was hoping Apple would address innovation other than it did. The iPad is neither a net-book (in the sense that it doesn't have comparable computational capabilities of the likes of an Asus, HP, or Dell) or a tablet (despite it's touch-functions).

The point remains - Apple has not addressed that niche- they've not yet developed a technology that fills the fine sweet spot between the input/display/comm and then-some capabilities of the iPhone/Touch and the portability and processing powers of a laptop. The iPad is indeed a fine color media-player/comm device but it remains limited (still, IMO) as a tablet-computer. Plus, I'm sure you agree, a Cintiq is a display/input device that requires to be tethered to a computer; these are not comparable technologies. Too bad, isn't it? As I said, I hope for version 2.

        Cheers,

        . Diego .

You know, the one thing that really annoys me about my iPhone, is that the screen is too small. But if it were any larger, it would be impractical as a phone. But then again, with 3G, I could still communicate with the iPad, in say a shoulder bag, via a bluetooth earphone, using Skype or AIM. Problem solved! When I first bought my iPod Touch (it was secondhand when I got it- my wife now has that), I went into the Apple store in Birmingham, and told them that if only the screen was three times bigger, the Touch would be 300x better. I agree with Pete, the iPad is going to do really well- especially at that price.

PS, my next PC will still be a Mac Mini. But I'll get an iPad next (and a Leica M9!!)

What gets me is the knee jerk reaction from everyone, all the blogs are going and it's mostly negative...

Just breaking is "Apple has launched its own bookstore called iBookstore" never saw this coming πŸ’š

So... the ipad is a better Kindle, that's all.

Apple noticed how well the Kindle was doing, so they made a better one.

They still sticking with AT&T sadly.

So it's all about expectation, nope Apple did not reinvent the wheel, just upped the Kindle and other e-readers.

Yes, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about AT&T from people in the States. O2 was pretty crap in this country, but O2 have improved (a little), and best of all, Vodaphone now sell iPhones (Vodaphone have the best network in the UK, IMHO). The iPad will be unlocked, so you can choose whatever carrier you wish, so it can't be too bad?

iirc, apple & at&t had and exclusivity arrangement which expires this summer (?).. after that, you should be able to use an iphone with verizon, sprint, tmobile etc..

the ipad though doesn't have this type of deal so you can use it with any carriers that offer microSIMs
(one cool thing about the at&t/ipad connection however is that there's no contract.. pay 15 bucks for one month only if you so choose etc..)

[edit] note my use of italics with 'should' up there.. that's meant to imply that i don't have a clue about the future of iphone and other carriers.. basically just trying to remember what i thought would happen in a couple of years __ a couple of years ago πŸ˜„

In my opinion its a dammed good idea, it fills the gap between proper laptop and smart phone, and to the best of my knowledge nothing does this very well at the moment.

I have no doubt that processing power and such will increase with time and given a couple of years it seems fairly reasonable that you could be running straight os x apps on it (or at least apps that are similarly powerful and diverse.)

Meanwhile, the cheapest version of the iPad has a full-color touch screen, a powerful processor and graphics chip, 16 gigabytes of flash storage, Wi-Fi and sells for $499.

Must say that i'm really impressed by the iPad's capabilities. I've been an iPhone user since launch and curently use 3GS for all my needs. The iPad will hopefully be a welcome addition. I'm watching closely the see what kinda Apps developers will create before i consider purchasing.

supposedly, you will be able to do some of that immediately..
iWork (maclike versions of excel, word, and powerpoint) has already been written for it..
i use iWork for estimating, job tracking, and presentations and really, they take a bit of power to run ok so if the ipad can handle some of my spreadsheets ok then i'm sold.

Not too long ago I was considering dropping $400 on a palm sized projector for my laptop to do sales presentations. For an extra $100 I could put my whole portfolio and a clients renders on this puppy and have it to do all kinds of other stuff as well. Unfortunately I don't have AT&T and don't plan on switching. I wonder how long before someone "jailbreaks" it to work on all carriers.

That's odd. Why not make it compatible on all carriers with a standard sim card reader? Why a microsim that no carriers are even using and wont say if they plan on using...weird.

probably something to do with apple not wanting everyone to stick their existing sims in the ipad.. maximizes additional money for the phone companies via the ipad?

i'm not really sure what it's about but more likely than not, it can be traced back to money.
