Import Poser/DAZ/.obj model into sketchup? WITH texture
-
Ok I am a total n00b and this has been KILLING ME!! I know how to use poser enough to pose people or DAZ is pretty easy to pose BUT i have not had ANY LUCK importing .3ds files even with the textures in the same folder as the 3ds file. the problem is the figure looks like a polygon machine person not all smoothed out AND the texture is on every single polygon.
Now when I look up "female" or "male" in the google 3D warehouse I see these perfect low poly count 3d models from iClone and Antics has anyone been successful exporting models from these programs and have it open in sketchup easily?
Ive tried soo many different ways ive even tried to export from blender but still no luck.
SOOO does anyone have an easy work flow to get a model with texture in tact to google sketchUP 7.1 thanks!

TIG's OBJ Import with Texture Ruby

Then there is the question why anybody would want to import a Poser human model into SketchUp. The figures are very high-poly and tend to make SU slow down quite a lot, even the version 1 and 2 ones. That is the reason why the human models in the SU libraries are so crude. There are some great SU artists like Alan Fraser who are able to combine a low polygon count with a sufficiently realistic appearance.

or how does one import a .3ds file into SU and KEEP the textures in tact? I have been trying to do this from poser but not working

don't use 3DS. use OBJ. then use the Ruby I linked you to.
3DS export from poser is not that good. plus posers native model format is OBJ anyway! -

the work flow i have now is DAZ to poser.. then poser .3ds to SU because when u go from DAZ it makes it into one big piece BUT it dosnt load the texture.. i try to load the texture and it shows on the model as thousands of tiny polygons get the texture even afteri smooth it out in SU so i have anicely formed manniquen which doesnt slow down SU but i cant textureize it
is there a way to auto simplify the polygons in SU maybe?

looks like your hitting the upper limit of what you can import in 1 go. using 3DS aint' gonna change that, infact it's going to make it worse.

but whats odd is.. when i import a 3ds it imports farily quick... it just wont load the texture
thats my only hurdle!! lol ugh this 3d stuff can be a pain!

Hello,
I have the reply to your question for importing a well textured character from DAZ or Poser.
As you already know, DAZ permit to export in .obj. You have of of course to tick on th case "with maps" other wise it will not textured at all.
After that, you have the problem with the object obj in 3ds not textured. You have to install on your computer a little software which is free (!!!!!) : ACCUTRANS 3D. You will find it here : http://www.micromouse.ca/at3d_install_2-12-3.zipWhen you run Accutrans 3D, you will open your obj character : you must tick on the following cases :
3D Studio (Binary)(*3DS) into "Save file type" tab
Avatar
UVAND at the side tab : "Output Scale Factor" you will put 20 on copy X...., Reset to... and Use Units.
and at the end, you will save into 3ds !!!!This is this version of your object ib 3ds that you will able to open into Sketchup.

I finish my tutorial :
So after you can open it into Sketchup, you will have perhaps some things to do like re-textured some very little parts of your object or character, little details then...
To use this into well textured 3ds, you need to have the pro version of shetchup which permit to export into 3D Studio (.3ds). This last registering into 3ds permit to have a well textured object.
So for resume, for having well textured object you have to pass by several steps :
DAZ Studio --> .obj
Accutrans --> to register first time into 3ds
SU --> to register second time into 3ds
= well textured object 3ds !!!That's i use and it works very well !!!
But may notice that the characters are often heavy in sizes into 3ds and obj. DAZ studio sell a little plugin with DAZ called DECIMATOR, you can easily use it in order to put off or hide some polygons.
