Is Vray easier to learn that 3DS?
-
Hi,
I'm just about to try to convince my boss that I should swap from 3DS (coz I’m struggling to get on with it) to Vray which will save money, but I want a render engine that will let me learn and render quicker. I'm quite handy with SU but I need that extra edge.
Thanks

That's comparing apples and oranges.
V-Ray is just a render engine - 3DS Max is a modelling package, but also includes the Mental Ray render engine. Both has a significant learning curve. But Mental Ray and V-Ray isn't too far apart.
So if you are comfortable modelling in SU and struggle with 3DSmax then go with SU and V-Ray. (Depending on what you need to model though - that would help know the context we're talking about here.)

Quick to render the output? Or quick to set up and configure?
Biased render engines, like V-Ray, tend to be more fiddly to set up. They are the fastest when it comes to producing the output. But you need more time to learn the tricks to get quality and speed.
Unbiased render engines, like Maxwell, tent to be easier to set up - more premade libraries of ready made materials etc - but takes a long time to render. If you invest the time to learn a biased render engine you will eventually produce high quality renders in very short time without the need of massive render farms.

Wow Thanks Thom.
I was looking for a quick result, because I can set up so default settings and then just make minor tweaks.
I'll put it the the Man and see what he says.
Thanks again
