Well, the "Do you render?" poll showed that a considerable part of the SCF members do not render, so this should encourage participation of the whole community and will prove to be a much more valuable resource than the "Render this" threads as we're all using the same "modeling engine". If these "Model this" threads also cover texturing techniques, even better. 👍

A couple of problematic modeling/texturing situations:

        -Thatched roof

Rendering or modeling, it is helpful to read these threads for those of us less able--as long as some explanation of method is discussed too.

Absolutely, the 'Model this' challenge will include texturing as they go hand in hand.
This segment will also help in explaining ruby's in a practical way, when one is used to achieve a result it can then be linked to the ruby as a working example of how it is applied.
Another great resource is to link the explanation/solution for future newbie questions referring to similar requests.
But most of all it gives us a challenge during slow times, and it keeps our skills tuned.
The great thing is that we will find many different ways to achieve results, some old schoolers will show how to achieve the results with standard SU and others will dazzle with one and two click ruby wizardry.

But again, the real point is to have fun and learn.

Can certain percent of the work be done outside SU (I'm thinking at least UV mapping)?

i think it might be better if there aren't any rules per se.. (like in the timed model challenge)
solo posts a picture/description and people post results -- no matter how they're obtained.. it's a SU forum so i'm pretty sure almost everything will be done in SU but if someone has a slick way to incorporate nonSU stuff, i wouldn't mind seeing it.

I guess it could, as we do have a new ruby that takes a SU model into a 3rd party UV mapping app and then back again.
However as far as modeling goes I would like it to be all SU, so no Blender, Silo, MOI, etc models please.

I wouldn't mind participating in this challenge. Mostly because I am not that great of a modeler and possibly this will help.

Great idea and I look forward to learning new techniques

should this be in it's own area like extensions, tutorials etc?

Next is to model Richard's exclamation marks, and render them with bloom. 😆

                                  Hey pete,

Can you give us some more information about these great (IMO) news?
And please, don't make me buy a 3rd party app, I could use an excellent freeware app just for this.

theres a list of apps that it works with, around half of which are freeware.

Yeah, thanks remus. But this is a list of apps, where you can export this SU UV-mapped model. Why to export there, edit UVs there and import again to SU? Its much better to UV unwrap in these apps, (blender for example, is superb on this). Because this has to do with organic modeling mostly, then another question, why not to model in these apps too (superb again). Thats why SU imports .3ds files.
So about this "model this" small friendly contest. Its about SU modeling only (IMO), using and learning SU. Using some ruby too. The .3ds import option is always there, waiting (lol).

Really great idea. I know I haven't have the time to contribute to to all the "render this" threads, but I sure follow them. The same will probably apply to the model this thread, work always gets in the way of fun,but I will contribute for sure as I find it really helps me personally push boundaries. Good stuff solo.

So let me get this straight?
There is a new ruby that takes a SU model in SU format (.skp) into another app, this app allows you to unwrap it make maps in photoshop for example apply them and then send the model back into SU? I have a few questions also!

This seems to good to be true, this app that you are referring to ar there more than one? could you use 3dsmax for example or blender?
Also does the SU file stay the same throughout or does it become 3ds for example. If that is the case things arnt looking so good anymore!
And lastly can somebody post a link to this ruby I looked but couldnt find it?

Apart form this great news yeah on this 'model this'. As it is more inclined towards modeling than towards rendering do you even need to spent lots of time setting up a render? Its not my best part you see?
