3D Warehouse viewer for the Iphone
-
Hi all,
I stumbled upon this:
Looks cool, probably more of a toy than an actual useful program, but nice either way.
Has anyone with access to an iphone tried it?

Hi Santiago,
I've tried out NaviCAD at 79 cent! I was disappointed with the application. It seems that I can only view models on a rotating view and from a 45 degree angle.

I had another look at the NaviCAD. I obviously did not give it a proper trial. Once I move the iPhone around it is possible to get any particular view.

Hi,
I'm one of the developers of NaviCAD. The app takes advantage of all the iPhone gestures:
- Swiping rotates the model
- Pinching zooms in/out
- On some models, double-tapping on a section of the model highlights the section and makes it the focus of rotation.
The IN/OUT button on the navigation bar toggles you between being inside and outside the model--it is only useful for models that do have an inside like stadiums and arenas. If you are on the inside and you have the iPhone 3GS, when you move the device around, it acts like a window to the model as the app leverages both the phone's accelerometer and compass functionality.
Happy NaviCADing! Chuck

Thanks Chuck and welcome to the SCF.
You have explained the controls much clearer than me. Its an interesting app. I think I will be able to knock some use out of it.

Hi All,
We've updated NaviCAD to address the following issues:
NaviCAD had been having trouble rendering models generated by the latest versions of Google Earth and SketchUp, but now that's been fixed.
NaviCAD renders models that have been created by Google Building Maker.
NaviCAD now processes textures much faster.
NaviCAD now honors transparencies in textures. A good example of a model that has transparencies in textures is KΓ©vin Girard's Eiffel:
Remember that if you want to see your models in NaviCAD, you must upload them to the Google 3D Warehouse as Google Earth (KMZ) models.
thanks! Chuck

We are looking for suggestions when we update NaviCAD for the iPad. We are already running it in full-screen mode on the simulator, but with the additional screen real estate, we have the opportunity to do some really cool things--the sky's the limit. Please be patient though--the approval process for an iPad version will be...lengthy.
Additional screenshots are here.
thanks! Chuck

Hehe! Chuck! My main man!!
YOU have just illustrated exactly why i will be getting an iPad, when they come out! Really, there is nothing revolutionary about the iPad, except that it has a bigger screen. This is just phase two of Apple's iPhone/ touch revolution
I think Tim summed this up really nicely in the iPad thread elsewhere on SCF;

And what's with the idiocy about "it's only a big iPod touch"? Are people on this forum - mostly designers - really not aware of the difference in effective functionality that changing size can cause? The bigger screen allows different usage modality to that of the iphone/touch. A still bigger screen - say 30" - would allow still others and would prevent some that are convenient with a 10" screen.
But I do agree with Mike, I too had problems with NaviCAD, and was considering getting Unity 3D to do pretty much the same thing. I suppose I need to have another go? Thanks for the 'heads up' as they say!

What version are you using? Can you let me know what issues you are having with the app?
thanks, Chuck

Chuck, don't worry, it was an early version of NaviCAD.
Any chance of getting both NaviCAD and LightUp to work with one another? Or is that too hard a possibility?

We've released NaviCAD for iPad for the launch of this game-changing device. You can get it directly from iTunes here. Note that it has the same functionality as the iPhone version except utilizing the bigger screen real estate--suggestions for added functionality to take advantage of the bigger screen are welcome at feedback@navicad.com.
thanks, Chuck

Chuck,
Looks like a nice app. A really interesting feature would be to use the geotagging of the 3DWH models along with the geo-location and the compass of the phone to automatically identify 3DWH models that are close to you. In theory using the compass you can focus on models close in a specific direction, vs. all around.
If everything was very accurate you could even mimic the actual viewpoint, but I expect that data and geolocation isn't there yet.

So cool
Just a few remarks:
The transparent parts sometimes show the background through instead of the model
If I double-tap, it zooms in way too far, and the part it focusses on gets darker as if it is selected. That's probably intentional, but I don't think it's supposed to Stay selected? -
