Creating filled shapes with holes in them

I am using SketchUp LayOut Version 1.0.1199 (beta) and am notating a sketchup masterplan in layout. The buildings have been colored in sketchup and now I am using filled shapes to indicate areas on the plan. I am decreasing the opacity so that the detail of the sketchup model reads. I am having problems though with that the color of the fill is manipulating the color of the buildings. It would be nice to be able to exclude the fill or erase it where it is over the buildings. Currently my solution is to take the opacity as low as possible, anyone have any better ideas, tips or tricks. Thanks.

You can exclude the fill from any shape you create in LO. Select your shape and go to the Shape Style area in LO. There you will be able to uncheck the FILL option. You will also be able to control the line weight and color of the remaining shape outline.
You should try LO 2.0 (comes with SketchUp Pro) there you will be able to do some tricks with vector rendering. It is much more stable as well. Have a look at this blog post pertaining to cutaways and clipmasks - http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/2009/06/taking-it-further-with-layout-clip.html

Nothing much to add to a great suggestion, but maybe put different colors on different layers so you could easily hide/show them.
