2012

you know what sucks? i graduate out of high school in 2012
meh ill just give up now and have as much fun as i can -
whoa jon.
that wouldn't happen. what you're describing is some sort of axis mangling.. we'd have to get hit by a pretty damn big comet (moon?) for that to occur but we'd definitely be insta-dead then.[edit] ok, just pulling quotes off the interweb here but....

"The magnetic field is one of the most fundamental features of the Earth," Singer told LiveScience. "But it's still one of the biggest enigmas in science. Why [the flip] happens is something people have been chasing for more than a hundred years."
When the next reversal comes, it probably won't inflict much damage to life on Earth, Singer said.
Though we could expect a slight increase in damaging cosmic radiation, which is usually repelled by the magnetic field, it shouldn't be enough to cause serious harm.
And though magnetic north and south poles will switch spots, the seasons and other cycles on the planet are primarily due to Earth's position relative to the sun, which wouldn't change significantly.
All in all, the flip is nothing that our planet hasn't faced many times before.
"The magnetic field has reversed itself hundreds, if not thousands, of times," Singer said. "Right now, the axial dipole is waning in strength, so we might experience a field reversal in the next two millennia if it continues to weaken at the current rate."

Regardless of how it happens, I've often wondered if the Earth's magnetic field flip can affect the magnetic properties of materials, such as hard drives, magnetic tape, and magnets in various apparatus. Any theories on this?
they way science can see the poles have switched before (and when) is from volcanic rock.. certain minerals in the lava orient themselves according to the magnetic field.. once the lava hardens, they are locked in that position even if the poles switch again..
that said, i don't think any of the things you mentioned are in tune with our current north and south poles (ie-flip a hard drive upside down and nothing happens) so i would have to say their data will remain intact if the poles flip..
they probably wouldn't survive if some sort of strong magnetic force were applied to them but i really don't know if that would happen or not upon a pole flip.oops --

and magnets in various apparatus
if 'various apparatus' includes a compass then yes, it will definitely be affected.

I think you are playing it down a bit Alan. IF it happens, then most plantlife is screwed as where was cold becomes hot and vice versa. No more rainforests, no more us.
-
Ok Jeff, but I still prefer my unfounded cataclysmic prediction to the view of an actual scientist.
-
You could still get that Jon...if a confused herd of migrating wildebeeste decide to migrate straight through your front room while you're watching TV.

Wake up brothers
"I am calling for an 'Intellectual Revolution'. I ask American citizens to free their minds from the tyranny of 'Dumb Think.' This is a revolution about thinking - not manning the barricades. It's about brain power - not brute force."
change of minds for the upcoming 2012

The new trailer is now available, looks great so far.
-
Wow...finally, the answer to all our problems, big and small! (And looks like a cool movie too :`)
-
Another triumph from Roland Emmerich. . ..The world's most sensitive and subtle Director. He gives a whole new meaning to over-the-top. That movie makes "Titanic" look like a Bergman film.

Wikipedia on magnetic pole shifting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal
Last time it happened was 780,000 years ago. I barely remember it happening but is surely the reason for my knee pain.
Geologists have found it is random, some periods as long as 10 million years between reversal, some periods 2x in 50,000 years.
The magnetic pole is presently 11 degrees off the axis and heading northwest, slowly, towards Siberia. We may experience a compass use surcharge from some enterprising Russians in a few decades.
Not much real danger coming in three years from crossing the glactic plain but it sure makes for good science fiction - that movie trailer looks great.
-
Whatever else happens, I bet New York gets it in the neck again. It seems to in every other global catastrophe movie....tsunamis, big freeze, meteorites, comets, aliens with attitude.....
-
Oh of course. Michael Bay, Roland Emmerich, all these guys, love to destroy icons, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building the White House.
By the way, how can an Aircraft carrier do a roll over ontop of the white house when RE already blew it up in ID4?

Tomasz,
Mayan December 21, 2012 (or, by others, October 28, 20011 – see “GMT correlation”) is not predicting the end of the world; it’s the end of the current calendar CYCLE, the START of a new ERA.
For global catastrophe, preferably see the Revelation, the last book of the Bible!TIG wrote:
“Eat, drink and be merry…!”
Voila a comparable Bible text: “Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.” (Ecclesiastes 11:9)Pete (solo) wrote:
“Is the clockticking on the end of the world?”
Yes, it is! Please verify: “…In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts." These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit.” (Jude 1:18-19)
Our necessity is a Spiritual revolution, rather than an “Intellectual Revolution”…!Alan,
Geomagnetic reversal isn’t a major problem for animals to navigate, becouse the magnetic field is extra for them…Cornel

Cornel, I know well this won't be the end, because have read the Revelation recently. For me, it is the hardest to understand chapter of the 'Good book' . I find more appropriate to quote Luke in the case of events shown in the trailer.

"When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky. "Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name.
@unknownuser said:
"There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand." He taught them a lesson. "Consider the fig tree and all the other trees. When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near; in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.
The new trailer is impressive. It is amazing what computer graphics can achieve.

From Proverbs 3:25 Do not be afraid of sudden panic,
or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes;
[26] for the LORD will be your confidence
and will keep your foot from being caught. -
Keep an eye on the oceans, and when the dolphins sing this:
Dolphins: [singing So long, and thanks for all the fish / So sad that it should come to this / We tried to warn you all, but, oh, dear / You may not share out intellect / Which might explain your disrespect / For all the natural wonders that grow around you / So long, so long, and thanks for all the fish! The world's about to be destroyed / There's no point getting all annoyed / Lie back and let the planet dissolve around you / Despite those nets of tuna fleets / We thought that most of you were sweet / Especially tiny tots and your pregnant women / So long, so long, so long, so long, so long! So long, so long, so long, so long, so long! So long, so long, and thanks for all the fish!/ If I had just one last wish / I would like a tasty fish!/If we could just change one thing / We would all have learnt to sing!/Come one and all / Man and mammal / Side by side / In life's great gene pool!/ So long, so long, so long, so long, so long / So long, so long, so long, so long / So long, so long and thanks for all the fish!]
It's time to Panic.
(no I'm not crazy, just this end of the world talk gets me thinking about 'The Hitchikers guide to the galaxy)

The end of the world is scheduled for about 5 billion years from now. The end of our tenancy of it, however, might be something entirely different...either because we are extinct, have left and closed the door behind us, or have eveolved into something as different from us as we are from an amoeba.

Thanks. I've put it on my Outlook calendar.
