2012

May i be the first to say i'm not convinced (bet you didnt see that coming )
Not entirely related, but i had a quick browse through a book on the subject and found this:

Every 18 months the power of computers double. Soon they will be smarter than us...
It might just be me, but reading things like that makes me instantly sceptical of a source.

It probably won't lead to the end of our World, but can drastically increase Suns activity, which is being already observed. It can screw up the Internet, for a while.
The flipping of the magnetic poles worries me more, as it makes sense to me, as the Milky Way has its own gravity. Scientists say that there is no direct connection between gravity and magnetism. I hope they are right.
-
you're talking about the magnetic poles right? (as in- if the flip happens, compasses will point south)
this has already happened quite a few times in earth's history.. it can happen independently of the rest of the solar system and/or galaxy.
-
A problem I noticed with the date 2012 is that the DVD release will be bust by 2013. Look what happened to 1984.
-
There is one certainty however, some idiot will launch an internet virus that day aptly called '2012 Doom' or something similar.
-
Well, although the oceans would probably (obviously) not behave like that, even a magnetic field reversal can have serious effects in (at least temporarily) disabling the Van Allen radiation belt which protects us from the Solar wind.
But never mind - the Earth will be so polluted by then that no-one will be able to survive outdoors anyway and mankind living underground will be protected anyway. Since there won't be life out of our artificial greenhouses by then, it won't really affect life on Earth.
-
Um, we are talking about 3 years from now right? Gaieus you seem to be describing a post apocalyptic earth.
-
Well, after losing my job a month ago, nothing seems to be impossible any more.
-
Sorry to hear that mate.
I'm in a similar situation, 90% of my freelance work dried up due to this recession so this is like the end of the world for me too, at least end of my 3D world.

Happen to me too - the recession bites back...
Seems we're all in the s**t together...
Things can only get worse - err sorry I mean - 'better'...
-
This is not recession, folks. Recession is when your neighbour gets unemployed. Or someone your friend's niece knows (or at least heard about).
When you get unemployed, it's called depression. Great Depression.
Anyway, I actually feel relieved now. I hated my job and the place. I'll get may salary till like September so I have time to start worrying.
But this is getting OT so let's get back to 2012. If it's so close, I might get some mortgage on my apartment and live great till Doomsday.
-
Since the beginning of time people have been predicting doom with observed cosmic events, yet we're still here. If it happens, it happens. 'til then, keep sketchupping.

Sorry to hear it, Gaieus. At least I can write I know what you are going through
Back to 2012 ... so this IHC - Institute For Human Continuity at the film page is a big marketing joke... ? Sony is playing hard. It is worth good few millions $...
-
At least the 2012 date is so late on it lets London do the very last Olympics !
The poles will flip - one day - they often have. But since we can't accurately predict the weather next week let alone the state of the planet in a few years time, why worry... Eat, drink and be merry [or properly miserable]...
-
Dear Gaieus and TIG,
I am sorry to hear about your plight. Obviously, your employers didn't know what we know, that you are both very talented. I trust that the Gods will be kind to you in the months to come.
Kind regards,
Bob -
If the Earths poles do flip in 2012, what about the Axis in Sketchup ,
will Google have a maintenance release ready ,
will we have to turn monitors upside down -
From unexplainable.net:
Things That Will Happen in 2012
The works of James Joyce will enter the public domain.
433 Eros, the second-largest Near Earth Object on record is expected to pass by earth in a near miss.
If she is still on the throne, Elizabeth II will celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.
The United States Census of 1940 will be released to the public.
On April 17 The United States will cede control of the military of the Republic of Korea after 50 years of control.
On July 27 the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics will begin in London at 7:30 pm.
On October 19 the Earth will be home to 7 billion people, according to the US Census Bureau.
The Replacement Eastern Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will open to traffic, replacing the old Eastern cantilever span that was damaged in the Earthquake in 1989, almost a quarter century after the span was damaged.
California's ban on the production of foie gras is scheduled to take effect.
NASA's new Orion spacecraft is scheduled to become fully operational for International Space Station support flights.
The Freedom Tower in New York City is scheduled to be finished by 2012 on the site of the World Trade Center.
Charles Manson will be eligible for a parole hearing again.
According to the 1997 book "The Bible Code" certain algorithms of the Bible code reveal that a meteor, asteroid or comet will collide with the earth. Could this be 433 Eros?
The book "The Nostradamus Code" speaks of a series of natural disasters caused by a comet (possibly as above) that will allow the third Antichrist to disperse his troops around the globe under the guise of aid in preparation for a possible nuclear war.
The book "The Orion Prophecy" claims that the earth's magnetic field will reverse.
Some proponents of a peak oil catastrophe place major events in 2012. Richard C. Duncan's book "The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge" claims that the Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide. Several studies predict a peak in oil production in or around 2012.
Is the clock ticking on the end of the world? Or the end of the world as we know it?
-
Regardless of how it happens, I've often wondered if the Earth's magnetic field flip can affect the magnetic properties of materials, such as hard drives, magnetic tape, and magnets in various apparatus. Any theories on this?
