      As you say the display speed is not comparable to other applications and must be improved.

      There are other (additional) possibilities: a display style that replaces components by symbols or boxes like in Vue or in the CityEngine. In the CityEngine (which creates billion polygons), the user chooses some boxes to be fully displayed.

      Another approach I would prefer is a progressive file format which only loads as much details as needed. The render engine does not need to render 10000 polygons for a tree in the background which is displayed 10 pixels large. As I observed, Google Earth already uses a progressive file format, but only for terrain and 3d-layer-buildings, but not kmz-files.

        I think one of the biggest slowdowns of SketchUp is it's inference engine, that gives you all sorts of information when modelling. it is probably THE most important feature of SketchUp and the main reason, why it is so easy and intuitive to use. but as far as I know it also kills a lot of speed (if you have a big model with a hundred-thousand polygons it surely is quite a bit of work to calculate a hundred-thousand inference-points).

        sometimes we don't need all the inference points of an object. a tree for example may contain a huge amount of leaves - but the only few points we want to snap is the centre-point (and maybe the corners of the bounding box).
        therefore it would be a great feature, if you could reduce or totally disable the number of inference points of a component. with the tree example I would either switch off inference for all of the leaves and twigs and only leave the trunk component enabled, or I would generate my own snap points...

        then, if you need some more inference points, you simply right-click the specific object and enable the full snapping mode again. wouldn't that be great?

          Great idea!
          But I doubt the SU team is listening to anything we say regarding this "issue".
          They have just ignored it for quite some time now and have a lot of catching up to do to get SU to where the competition is now.

                  I have a wee feeling they might be aware of our wishes in this regard. 😄

                        I sometimes think that SketchUp's inability to handle multi-million poly geometries is what separates me from all the yahoos out there who plonk 3dsmax created model into sketchup twick it a little a put 'expert SketchUp modeler' in their resumes..

                        Modeling in low-poly is both a limitation and a blessing of SketchUp.

                          okay;

                          this aspect seems to have been drastically imporved with 7.1 , it's a great move on the right direction... 😲

                          i've tested some orbiting moving with a large model, and everything was good... working on it will probably confirm this...

                          good work Google team. keep enhancing this aspect of Sketchup...
