I am currently modeling on a roof (with a lot of different components for struts, beams, etc.). now I would like to create another option with slight adjustments to most of the elements contained in that roof.

that means, every component that I want to alter, I first have to make unique. and if there is quite a formidable number of comps it is rather tiresome (and annoying, if I forget it).

therefore I would like to have a function to 'Make Unique with Sub-Components', meaning, that every different sub component is made unique and copies of it automatically replaced by the new unique component.

that would be something cool and could save a lot of time!

[Edit] Damn, wanted this thread to appear in the 'Wish List' section of course. but now that I come to think of it, maybe that could be a sensible and realistic ruby request. could one of the moderators move this thread to the ruby-section? that would be fantastic. and sorry for the trouble 😳

Doesn't it work if you open the Main component, Select All, and Make Unique? Or is it deeply nested?

An alternative would be to export the main component and then make your changes to the exported file and then import it into your main file afterwards. ...or, does that cause problems as well?

Not a solution, but you cold probably do this pretty quickly in the outliner, especially if you set up a 'make unique' shortcut.

all three suggestions are good, guys.

            • select all and make unique (didn't know that was possible)
[Edit] although that doesn't work if there are several copies of the same component []

            • exporting and importing again (which makes them unique automatically, but you have to open another SU)

            • doing the outliner trick with a shortcut assigned to 'make unique'

thanks a lot for your ideas. no ruby needed anymore πŸ˜‰

I think it only makes unique those that aren't identical. If some are left unchanged you will have the two roofs sharing some components. I think... It's something to be aware of if you do further editing.

man, you are right. only changed components are made unique, when reimporting the whole bunch! that is really great. SU can be quite intelligent at times.
thanks for pointing that out, thomthom.

I could!ve moved it there ut as there seem to be a couple of good solutions, I decided to move it to the main SU Discussiosn. πŸ˜‰ (<--- no "special" meaning for the wink)

                  Gai...
