I've been trying to find some easy way for my students to add surface detail to their models and hit on the of using dingbats as 3d text - no doubt you've all done this before but I thought it was quite neat.
Anyway, this is a quick Podium render of an experimental piece using a celtic dingbat font

I like the shadow detail in this and thought it could have other uses

A clever use of 3D Text.

A quick www trawl lists loads of dingbat, celtic, art-deco, classical and other 'frieze' fonts that are specifically designed to do just in 2D what you've thought of in 3D - many are free or have 'samples'...

        Good thinking...

A great idea, but as a word of warning, if you need to use a lot of these, the polycount of your model will grow quite fast, so in most cases I would recommend using textures, with or without alpha transparency. Of course, this one casts very beautiful shadows...
