Help building a hull.
-
Hello, I need some instructions (step by step if possible)on how to build this hull. I have tried and tried and tried, but to no avail. I can build everything else, I just cannot get the hull to look right. It is just too difficult for me. Here is some pictures so you can see what I am trying to build:
And a profile picture:

Have you tried the "Soap Skin & Bubble" plugin?
If not, check it out: www.tensile-structures.de

Captain,
"Tom" has a couple of demonstration models in the 3D Warehouse, on how to "stitch" together a boat hull, using cross-sections:

Alternately, you can use the "SketchyFFD" (Free-Form Deform) plugin to shape the hull, starting with a gridded rectangular block, similar to the image Pilou posted here:
http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=6029&start=195#p113383
...and there is the "Soap, Skin & Bubble" plugin, to which amsterdam refers:

(example step-by-step boat hull images)

Another discussion in the SCF,...

...with a tutorial model demonstrating the use of SS&B (Soap, Skin & Bubble)...and a couple of external programs for hull design, producing results that can be imported into SketchUp:

Pardon my inexpirence, but how does one install a plug-in, the soap bubble one for example.
-
Download it, then move it to your plugins folder (c->program files->google->sketchup 6/7->plugins)
-
Most plugins are downloaded directly into your Plugins Folder: C/Program Files/Google/Google Sketchup 7/Plugins
If I remember correctly, SSB goes in the Tools folder after extraction. It does tell you on the SSB website.

That's what I was missing, thanks for the help.

Another way to generate a basic hull shape is to use Intersections or 'booltools' (soon to be released ruby by Whaat which automatically does the intersection and deletes the unwanted geometry)
I used Google and found a small blue print of a basic boat (not a great source I'm afraid) and set up for tracing.
Next I traced out the profile (notice I only did half boat as I wanted symetry and to keep poly's low)
Once my tracing is done I colored the sections (to make viewing easier) and grouped them seperately
Now this is the important part, I pulled all three groups so that they totally intersect one another. Now you need to intersect them and remove the
geometry you do not need, I used 'booltools for this one as it's only three clicks instead of a lot of erasing manually. Now you have a basic shape and you can start working on the details (i made the 1st half a component and duplicated and mirrored it so that you only need to edit one side)
Hope this helps

Then there is the 'sandbox' way.
Create your basic shape, remove all faces leaving the line work only, then select all and use the 'from contour' option.
There will be some cleanup needed, but generally it should work just fine.[flash=500,344:3t06z6lg]http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=2560419&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1[/flash:3t06z6lg]
