i have a big file with a dummy building in it while the detailed model of the building was done on another file. as they are not placed at the same point relative to the origin in their respective files i though i could move the origins of both files to same corner of the building so that i could simply paste in place the detailed model onto the big file when all is done.

but i was wrong in assuming that because the paste in place operation disregards the two models positions in relation to the new origin and puts the model exactly on the spot it was before the origin was moved.

can anyone comment on that or offer me a sure way of making what i described above?

      thanks.

can confirm that behavior of SketchUp. doesn't refer to the changed origin when copying from one file to the other.

but why don't you create a component out of your dummy building and then move it's origin (right-click > Change Axes) to a specific corner. then you change the origin in the file of the detailed model to be at the same corner of the building.
and finally you right-click the dummy component and use the 'Reload' function to replace it by the high-detail version.

that should do the trick and I guess even a moved origin in the high-poly file should be interpreted correctly.
