So Frustrated with SU

Is there a way to put the model on here so someone can take a look at it and tell me if I am crazy?
I have tried to upload it twice and I guess I am doing something wrong. -

You didn't make a mistake in learning Sketchup. It still is the fastest modeler around.
A 9 Mb file shouldn't produce too much of a speed drop. (I sometimes work on SU files +100 Mb)Sketchup does have an issue handling larger polycounts (which needs URGENT adressing by Google !), but I think in your case something else is wrong.
When using a new PC it is very important to search for the latest drivers for your graphical card.
This can increase performance quite a bit. Best look at the official Nvidia website to download the latest.
For some laptop graphical cards you will need to go to an 'unofficial' site to get the latest drivers.
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ is a good resource for that.If upgrading GPU drivers doesn't help, browse this forum as there are a lot of threads on optimising editing speed.

After updating the graph card (I really suggest you start with that) Sketchup runs quite well, except for the typical speed drag every SU user experiences on complex files and which can be a pain.A 9 Mb should not pose a problem on your laptop though, as long as you respect the workarounds to keep the editing speed up.
(layering, shadows 'off', textures 'off',using components instead of groups of the same geometry, etc....)The largest file I ever worked on was 128 Mb. I managed editing it as long as I turned all the bells and whistles to 'off'. Since I not ever use straight sketchup output (I always run my model trhough a render engine), I hardly ever put on 'shadows' and I only leave materials 'on' when I am texturing.

Why would I need to update the graphics card on a brand new computer? Shouldnt the graphic cards it came with work?

You see the driver is actually for desktop and you need to run a mini-crack to install it on your laptop. There are clear instructions on how to do that on the website. Just follow it you should be fine. btw the latest Graphics card on Macbook Pro is also 8600M GT so you really shouldn't have a problem.
Chango- I can't find the 175.5 driver at that website, do you know where else I might could find it?

From what I can see of that model, I don't think it should
be any larger than a 2-3Mb!Have you selected Use Hadrware Acceleration?

Yes I have done that. What would make the model so much larger than it actually should be?

Poor use of components and groups also watch your 'texture' sizes.

Thanks for the help everyone, I know whats making this particular model slow, the plants and the building, I guess where my frustration is, is that the overal all model is not large at all, it is a rooftop , I will soon be working on city parks for school, and I am kinda feeling like unless I want to purchase a $4000 computer, SU isnt going to run right.
And another thing, one of my favorite aspects of SU is the "sketchy styles" that you can mix and match, but heaven forbid I use those b/c the whole computer crashes and I have to turn it off.

Sorry, I guess I am just a computer idiot, but why would the drivers need to be updated on a brand new computer?

A lot of the time the drivers supplied with the computer are pretty old, i guess the manufacturers just dont update their versions very often.

If the models too bug to upload here you can upload it at the 3d warehouse. 10mb limit

Because the drivers MS ships with Windows don't support OpenGL.

I had a peek at the picture....if I can see from a picture that there is clean up work to do then the model will have a lot to tell.

OK, I had a look at your model (it's actually only a bit less than 5 Mb). The problem is not in the file size since you use a lot of plant components and all - its that there are 600,000 edges and 220,000 faces which all count up to performance issues. I see that you cleverly put the different plants, people and furniture (where you anso have some high poly ones) on different layers. Now why not turn the visibility of these layers off while working on other parts of the model? That's the whole idea actually in using them during modeling!
Apart from updating your video driver to a better one (which everyone here keeps suggesting), note that edges (more exactly geometry generally) is mostly supported by the processor and if you have a fairly decent but definitely not very powerful 2.4 GHz processor, it can slow down considerably even with a seemingly small model. I have a model that is only about 6.7 Mb but has more than twelve million edges and of course my old desktop cannot cope with that so I never turn everything on unless I export either 2D or 3D from it.

Thanks so much for taking a look!, you are right it is around 5mb, not sure why I was thinking it was 9.
So I need to learn to cut down on the number of edges and faces? I do leave all of the heavy layers off, while working on it, but when I turn them back on is when everything freezes.
