So what do you think they are?

Im still trying to decide really, but i think the bike has got to be pretty high on the list. Then maybe cider. I need more time to think of the rest.

        Microwave.
        I mean... cook a full dinner in a minute and a half with no chance of overcooking;
        What's better than that?

But I was watching a show on the Discovery channel about the top 10 inventions. Number one was the toilet (fair enough if you think about it).

          1.The wheel
          2.The Bicycle
          3.The pencil.
          4.The Swiss army knife
          5. Sketchup!

          5 Most over-rated inventions:

1: The Dyson vacuum cleaner, the filters clog in no time at all and then the suction is crap.
2: Clocks; apparently the Hopi Indians described time as "an over-rated measurement"
          3.Microwaves - mushy tasteless food
          4. Toyota Prius car - producing the toxic batteries for it apparently outweighs most of the environmental benefit of driving it.
          5. Processed foodstuffs - speaks for itself

I'd agree about the toilet. In fact anything major to do with public health and sanitation has got to be pretty high on the list. A typical case of you wouldn't miss them till they were gone.

I think i'll have to be boring as well and add the toilet to my list.

John, whats wrong with microwaves? they dont ruin food, if you put good food in you generally get good warm food out.

Good point on the prius though. Definitely only a stop gap measure, as the electricity has got to come from somewhere.

Making and using string >>> thread, sewing of furs / skins, weaving of cloth, making baskets, sewing, strings, ropes, clothes, tents, sails, bags etc
Making forms in pottery >>> containers for carrying water and produce, then cooking food, sculpture etc...
Making and/or using fire >>> cooking food, firing pots, smelting metals, making glass etc...
Making and using meaningful marks >>> paintings, drawings, art, sculpture, writing, books, computers etc...
Making cutting tools in general >>> axes, knives, chisels, saws, arrows etc... >>> stone then metal - stone-working, carpentry, construction, hunting, butchery, (unfortunately war etc) etc...

Most others things come from these few...

                Any other 'basic' ideas ?

                    1. The printing press. This isn't my original idea, but would have to agree that it is probably the greatest invention ever, for it revolutionized communications and the spread of ideas.
                    2. The refrigerator. (this was my Grandfather's idea of the greatest invention of the last 100 years. Makes sense to me.) Prior to it's invention, peoples choice of food was limited, and short-lived.
                    3. The internet, for the same reason as no. 1.
                    4. The microprocessor.
                    5. Innoculations.

oh yeah, and no. 6 SketchUp

Does fire qualify as an invention? Or is it really a discovery? It does occur naturally, after all.

I agree with most of the suggestions above, but I'd have to add one more:

Writing and reading (counts as one). Without it much of the knowledge on how to do pretty much everything would be lost, imagine having to re-invent things over and over because there wasn't a way to record it the previous time. I think pretty much everything could build on this one, just my opinion anyway.

and we had to live without all those beautyful ruby scripts (these are text-files after all) 😲

How are women an invention? But I share the sentiment.
