I'm working on a file now which has begun to crash nearly hourly.

I've used the Fix Problems several times without SU finding any problems.
Has any of you lot experienced that certain files will make SU unstable? If so, did you find a solution to it?

      SU 6.4.112
      Intel Core Duo 2.4GHz
      2GB RAM
      nVidia Quadro FX 3500 - ForceWare 162.65

Only time I've had SU get unstable was when I put a rather detailed and large model of a piece of furniture into the bed of a rather detailed and large model of a pickup truck. These each were done as separate models and I think I overloaded the non graphics oriented laptop I was working on which also had some other network and administrative type stuff running in the background.

Only thing I can say is cleanup the model, get rid of any geometry that is not needed, get rid of anything eating memory and reboot to reset all them things in the computer that need to be reset every now and again.

May all your dimensions be the sum of their total.

SU has in the past, very occasionally, shown weird behaviour for a variety of reasons. I remember one case in which a file had bloated itself massively, both in terms of size and navigability, way beyond what the geometry would have indicated. No, were are not talking about something as simple as purging or imported geometry being hidden way off in the distance. It turns out that there was a bug concerning a text string or something that had replicated itself thousands of times within the code.
The solution then was to simply manually select everything (You never know what Select All might pick up) and copy it to a new, clean file. That might work in this case.

Rebooting also is a good idea, as Sawduster says

You may try changing open GL settings, it has helped me on a laptop.
That means stop hardware acceleration or fast seedback or combine differnetly

I wonder if my problem started after I applied texture to the model. Because without textures the file was around 1-2MB. (I used lots of components.) And I've ensured that every component is clean and free of unneeded geometry. And so far I've only used one component that I didn't make myself and that was a tree from the SU download area. However, with the textures the model is now up to 14MB. I model without the textures visible, but maybe they are still causing trouble...

Problem is that I can't just copy my model into a new file because I'm using V-Ray and all the materals will be lost if I do so...
