Is there a ruby to stretch multiple different components at the same time? (stretching an armoire 5" to the right w/o changing rails)

Some discussion I started in Newbie forums..

      http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=4533

Hoping for a link or answer or suggestions 😃

      Thanks,
      ~Carl

I know exactly what you want but alas I've not found anything. The only work around I figured was to group all similar pieces, ie: shelved, etc, and use the scale tool to stretch out to new gable location.

        Have you got another ??

if you want the components deformed, when strechting, simply select all of them and use the scale tool to scale them.

if you only want their position "scaled", but their personal shapes to stay the same, do exactly the same (selecting all of them and scaling them). then right click on every component and choose "reset scale".
(unfortunately you can't do that for all of them at once, but have to do that for every single one seperately)

The Scale would be the incorrect tool to use for the application. The Move tool would be appropriate here, though. If the armoire is drawn as a single collection of geometry, i.e. a single component or group, open the component/group for editing. Choose either the front, top or back view and drag a selection box around the right half the armoire. Then use the Move tool to move the selected geometry 5" to the right. You might need to do this in multiple steps if there are frame and panel doors drawn on the armoire. You might find it easier to move the right half 2-1/2" to the right and the left half 2-1/2" to the left bevcause this will leave the centerline in place. Then move the entire armoire 2-1/2 to the right if desired.

If the armoire was built of individual components. i.e. each piece of wood in the real thing is drawn as an individual group or component, then you simply select those components whose position changes but not size and move them. This might include the legs, rails, stils and panels for the side as well as perhaps the face frame stile (right side in your example). Then, edit the face frame rails, doors and drawers.

If you make like parts components instead of groups, you only need edit one instance which reduces the time spent resizing the entire piece. If there are two doors side by side in the piece and they are instances of the same component, move the right door 2-1/2" to the right and resize it by 2-1/2". Or better, if the right door is a mirrored version of the right, move the right hand door 5" and then edit it to move the left half of it 2-1/2" left. This will result in both doors meeting at the centerline.

Using the Scale tool for this would result in stiles becoming wider and side panels becoming thicker which is not what you'd want.

A plugin would be nice for this if it could edit multiple, unrelated components at the same time.

              Hey Dave,

I don't know if it's dyslexia or my own stupidity but I got confused about halfway through the instructions. Anyway, could you do a small tut on this method?? Or is there one already in existence that I missed?!

I know that this question has been asked before and some fellow members are in the process of developing a ruby to serve that exact purpose (aimed at cabinet makers and woodworkers).

              Have a great day
