Empty Groups Disappear?...Oh, and Hello Again!!!
-
So this is where you've all been hiding...nobody ever tells me anything....
I gave up going to the Google groups because basically, in the words of Eric Cartman, "They totally suck ass." These forums are so much more usable, kudos to Coen and Gaieus...
Anyway, I'm trying to make an empty group. Why? To use as a 'deselector'. In the Mac version, you can't click on the Model Name in the Outliner to deselect everything, and sometimes you're so zoomed in, there's no free space to click in.
So I make two groups, then group them. The delete the two sub-groups...the enclosing group disappears...It never used to be like that, did it?

Hi Tim (and welcome)
I think it has always been impossible to create an empty component or group but at least you can create an "ultimately small one"; just one endpoint (more exactly, "theoretically" two - with a line of 0 length between them).
Here is one attached (it's in the origin). Note that with the left to right select method or with the '"select all" command (Edit menu) you cannot even select it. You can select it with just clicking on it or with the right to left select method (or from the outliner).
(I still regularly visit both SU GGroups... )

Tim,
Why easy if you can do things in the difficult way?
This might be what you need. make use of the +/- selecting method with Shift.
When there is no empty space to deselect then:
%(#0000FF)[**- just click on a face;- hold Shift while clicking on that same face again.**]
You will have nothing selected by then.

p.s. It's not all rubbish in Google Groups! -
Does the Mac version not use Ctrl + T to 'select none'?

p.s. It's not all rubbish in Google Groups!Yeah, sorry, I should have explained...I can only use one hand, and Shift-click isn't assigned to any of my mouse buttons in SU. So Shift clicking would entail taking my hand off the mouse, hitting shift twice to lock, grabbing the mouse, triple clicking, taking my hand off the mouse, hitting Shift again to unlock it....
That's why my workflow requests probably look a little odd to people from the outside...

Csaba...Nagyon köszönöm szĂ©pen a kĂs ajĂĄndĂ©kra! (is that the right case ending there?) De sajnos a Skippy-t nem lĂĄthatom...
I remember putting in a request for a Create Empty Group Ruby, and being told not to be so daft, and to do it the way that I outlined. But it was a long time ago...and my memory isn't what it was...

Gaahh..I've just seen it...Command-Shift-A - Select None...I almost never use the Menus, so hadn't noticed it. Duhhh...
It would still be easier for me just to click on the file name in the Outliner, like you can in Windows...

Hehe... "ajåndékot" is the correct suffix :;
Also, you either say "nagyon köszönöm" or "köszönöm szĂ©pen" but not both at the same time but in any case; szĂvesen!Would it be useful?

Hi folks.
You may also have a minimalist group if you use only a Center Point obtained by right clicking on a circle, a polygon or an arc. Delete the circle, polygon or arc then group the remaining single point. You may even hide it if required.
Just ideas.

Well I can fully appreciate your situation Tim, I work the same myself only able to use my right hand.
On a side note I have just recently purchased a new Logitech mouse which allows me to map 8 functions to it. It is fantastic -
Tim,
I donât get it. You mean that when you have selected something it is not possible to click next to the group- or component- names in the outliner to deselect, i.e. in white space. That would be an immense MacDrawBack. In Windows we can.
And what would be the purpose of an empty groupâŠâŠ I still donât get it.
Clicking on a special empty group in the outliner to unselect is like asking for that white space.
A group of any size that has nothing visible (and I donât mean by hiding entities) is easy but you would still select it by clicking on it, whether in the model or in the outliner.
Dylanâs suggestion for another mouse sounds like a good idea.Wo3Dan

Wo3Dan -- I can see you've never used the Mac outliner! OK, we can stretch it vertically, but often, my list of groups fills the entire window. No white space. Clicking in the white space to the side of a group selects that group. If we could simply click on the top-level model name to deselect everything (like you can in Windows)...I think it was CraigD who agreed this should be implemented, but that was over a year ago...
There are a LOT of problems with the Mac Outliner...but that's for another place...
Oh, and thanks for the tip, Johnny!
