      Julius,

I went through the 3D text fonts but cannot tell you which particular font it is. If it cannot be found among these fonts, it may have been installed by the user or he may have as well created the lettering in an external application and import them into SU.

I would just get an image of the text - for example the Sony logo and save as a png, then import into SU and place where required.

Dylan, I often import images into my models but they are always saved and imported as jpgs. Seeing as I'm not realy a computer person, my question is: what exactly is png, how is it different from jpg, and is it crucial to import png rather than jpg.

If you don't know where you're going, you're never going to get there.

            Hi Gidon,

Im certainly no expert in this either, it needs someone like Ross Macintosh who seems to have a very good knowledge on this sort of thing.

The difference between jpg and png that I am aware of and the reasons I sometimes use it is that png is a lossless format yet still has some compression. It also supports transparency.
I also read once that png is better for text and graphics than jpeg, probably because there is not a lot a jpeg can lose/compress in just text.

Yes, obviously one great advantage of png files is that they support transparency so whenever you apply them on a surface there can be areas where you can "see through".
Open your materials browser and check out the "Fence" materials. They are all (?) partly transparent png files and using them will let you have those fences without the need of modelling all that stuff and loading your model with heavy geometry.

also a lot of the 2D plants work with these transparent png's

Yet there are drawbacks; this "transparency" does not support shadows - i.e. the whole face will cast the shadow as a big "block". Mostly you would turn off the "cast shadow" feature of the entzity...

But this is already OT - on a mobile phone you need not cast shadows... 😄
