Extrude but preserver original line

Is there a way to make the extrude tool not merge the faces of the original shape with the extruded part?
Example: Extruding a square four times and afterward have lines cutting through the face at each interval done.

Never mind. Just realised that Ctrl did the trick.

I thought there was a way to subdivide (or whatever its called) to divide something into equal sections, or does that only work on lines?
I dont know how to do it myself as I keep forgetting to look it up ive seen it before but i have to find time to try it myself a couple times so i remember it.

I think you draw a line at the beginning of the surface you want to divide, then copy that to the other end of the surface, then you immediately afterwards before doing any other commands type "/10" if you want to split it into 10 equal parts.
I think that's how it was.To extrude a face multiple times just type "*10" afterwards.

Hi folks.
Right click on a line and choose "Divide" in the contextual menu. You can control the number of divisions interactively by looking at the red dots that will appear on the line and the number of divisions that will appear in the VCB. Of course, you can override all that by ttyping the required number in the VCB and validate it by pressing ENTER or RETURN.
For a face, extrude to full heigth. Then, select one end face and Copy/Move it to the other end. Then, immediately type /X in the VCB where X is the number of intervals that you want between the faces. For example, typing 4 will yield 4 intervals and you will end up with the two end faces and three faces equaly spread in between.
Just ideas.

btw, is there a way to merge lines that's been broken up?

Thomas, if you only have one or two endpoints along the length of a line, you can merge one in the middle with the one on the end just by hovering carefully above the point with the move tool and when the green inference point shows up grab the endpoint and move it to the end. (thanks kannonbal)
You can also draw temporary lines from the segment ends and then delete them if it was really one line, the surplus endpoints will disappear.
