SU24 Crashing on startup.
-
My Sketchup has started behaving oddly this week, sometimes it just crashes within seconds of being started, I don't get past the welcome screen and it just bugsplats, but it doesn't do it every time. Any thoughts?

Rename your Plugins to say ####Plugins to prevent it loading. Start SketchUp and a new Plugins folder will be created.
If it starts then you can safely say there's a conflict at play.
Then comes the narrowing down process......

Sorry, can you dumb that down to the lowest possible level for me please , I'm not sure what you're asking me to do.

Hello,
I have the problem on SU2024 for Windows, it's profile profile builder 4 (4.0.2)
check in the sketchup log, SketchUpLog-2024-xxxxxx.log, the x's are the date, time and an id.
If in your run (windows key + r) you type %temp% you will fall into your temporary directory.
This is what log sketchup creates, be careful if everything works correctly it is destroyed by sketchupIn my case the last attempt to load an extension was the one that caused sketchup, but that means that it is the problem, perhaps another extension loaded before and the cause of the problem.
It made me understand a little bit what was happening.
in my case I still had to deactivate PB4 because I have V-Ray and it is the most complicated type of extension to deactivate

@grizzler SketchUp installs Plugins to the following path...
C:\Users\SomeName\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2023\SketchUp
If you go there when SketchUp is closed with your File Explorer you can rename the Plugins folder to ###Plugins (or any name you wish that doesn't conflict with existing folders). This means when you launch SketchUp none of your Plugins will load.
SketchUp will then see there's no folder named Plugins and it will create one.
So you now have a vanilla environment. If SketchUp launches without issue it is fair to assume your start-up issues are related to to your ###Plugins folder.
Now close SketchUp and go to
C:\Users\SomeName\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2023\SketchUp
and you will see a folder called Plugins and the troublesome ###Plugins folder. You have the awkward choice of dragging dropping folders/files for extensions into Plugins folder in small batches to see when the startup issue occurs.
Or delete the recent Plugins folder and rename the ###Plugins back to Plugins then try hunt down the issue.
I'm experiencing similar issues where SketchUp won't launch and/or will get to Welcome Screen then fail. So I feel your pain.

@FlawinneF I understood a small amount of what was said, but enough to put 2 and 2 together to understand that PB4 which has only recently been installed, is most likely to be the problem. Thank you.

@Rich-O-Brien Thanks Rich, if removing Profile Builder doesn't fix it for me then I'll reluctantly go through this somewhat laborious process

Hello,
It's me here is the list of extensions which conflict with PB4 and Sketchup 2024 crash- V-Ray (6.20.03)
- 1001bit tools (freeware 1.0.5)
- Flowify (1.1.0)
It's 3 extensions loaded before PB4
Individually it is stable with PB4 it crashes Sketchup 2024.
-
@FlawinneF I took the path of least resistance and removed PB4 and it worked. I only had the trial version so it's no bother for me to lose it.
-
For info,
The PB4 is fixed by version 4.0.3 https://support.mindsightstudios.com/hc/en-us/articles/29660587053971-Fix-for-SketchUp-crashing-shuts-down-on-startup-when-Profile-Builder-4-is-installed.
