SU2021 Housebuilder plug-in and Tags
-
SU2018 you could set a default layer and each new wall would be in the defined layer each skin layer would inherit the layer1_skin name. This doesn’t appear to work the same in 2021 with its tag system.
Question / Is a rewrite of housebuilder plug-in required to be tag aware ?

I wouldn't expect Housebuilder to get any updates. It hasn't had any in 15 years or more. There are better, more robust extensions out there to do what it does.
As for your description of layer/tag usage, it sounds like you are ending up with edges and faces with layers or tags. ALL edges and faces should have Layer 0 or Untagged assigned to them. ONLY objects (groups and components) should get a layer or tag. The simplest and most efficient workflow is to leave Layer 0/Untagged active at all times.

HB creates its Groups/Objects/Components No need to worry. Force Thomthom's cleanup tool to move everything to layer0
SU2021 tag system doesn't follow 2018 way of using defined layer names. This becomes a nightmare list of ambiguous names right from the start. At lease SU2018 in this sense was easier to organise into a easy list to toggle on and off.
TIG told me the same about layer0 as you've mentioned many years ago.
As for better more robust extensions, What are they?

i had tweaked my copy many years ago to specify the layer (gwb_Layer0) and some of the general defaults and lumber size lists. however i only use it for quick drawings where i don't need them for construction drawings (i use my own dynamic components for that). however, Medeek has a number of (paid) extensions which appear quite robust and if you need not only the models but related metadata, this would be a good choice. there are also some other extensions as well - if you search the plugins store you'll find them easily.

I'm not worried. I know how Housebuilder works. I've used it since it was first released.

I have no problems with using tags in 2021 and prefer it to the old Layers.

And apparently you didn't follow his advice, either.

Search for Medeek in the Extension Store.

My workflow in SU2018 with the advice you and TIG suggest is followed but I leave it to ThomThom's cleanup tool to move everything to layer0 When I'm happy with it.
