Glass insulator for telegraph or telephone wires. The original was made around 1928. Modeled to show a skeptic that it's possible to model that sort of thing in SketchUp. I added the straight key for scale. The key was made by Lionel in 1943.

        Very nice, Really nice image
Back in the day I had a couple of these in my bachelor pad as decorations. I think I still have them somewhere.

Thanks Phil. I remember when insulators were collectibles like beer cans and little ceramic figurines. I wonder if anyone still collects these old insulators.

Great model and image. Got to love the “you can’t do that in SketchUp” Yes people still collect the glass insulators. Have a friend , a retired lineman who has a whole bunch of them.

              Thank you, sir.

I always like that you can't do that... thing. 😉

It used to be that those insulators would bring a pretty high price. Is that still the case?

Another cool one Dave 👍 . Don't think they sell for the kind of money they did years ago. Hard core collectors like my retired lineman friend will pay up for very specific examples , era and manufacturer and type of glass seems to drive the price. Interesting site note to this is I've seen some that are an unusual purple color. My expert told me they were clear when made but something in the composition of the glass causes them to turn color from exposure to the sun ?

                          Is the second one ceramic?

                          Excellent model. 👍

Yes. I didn't make the brown color dark enough to match the glaze they used on them because the detail would disappear.

Things like these aren't really all that complicated to model but because of their small size, the brown one is less than 4 in. tall and the glass one is less than 3, it takes a bit of a different approach in SketchUp to get the smooth surfaces.

                            And thank you!
