Upgrading for dummies ..just HOW do you update ?

OK, so a few weeks ago I bought SU Pro, with the maintenance and upgrade full license and now they bring out SU 2018, which I am apparently entitled to upgrade to.
In Sketchup 2017 I "check for updates' and it tells me my version is up to date ! I cannot see any link to update at sketchup.com, only to download the full version of SU 2018. I tried doing that but it will not accept my serial number/authorisation code ( I checked my license and it has been changed to a newer serial number from SA-xxxx... to TA-xxxx.., I've tried old and new !)
So, in plain language please, just how do you update from to 2017 to 2018 ??

Go to http://www.sketchup.com/download/all and download latest version.
To get your new serial, if it has not been communicated to you already.
Go to https://www.sketchup.com/license/renew
Insert your licence, the system will check their database and report on your maintenance status together with a new serial for SUpro2018 if maintenance is current (which it should be from your feedback on when you bought / renewed / upgraded earlier in the year).
Install SUpro2018
Insert serial and authorisation
Done

Yes, I have downloaded the new version , yes I have got a new serial number, but no, it will not accept it ! Maybe it was just a glitch in the database or something, I will try again when I get home tonight. Thanks anyway.
Edit.... I have just read a new comment on the main SU 2018 thread, you have to click on the send email button to also get a new authorization number, not just the new serial number generated online. Perhaps not the most intuitive way of updating software for new users ? Anyway, something to do tonight...... -
I too found it odd that going into 2017 version and into "updates" doesn't bring up the 2018 version, but it's available using the link in the email named "where do I get started?".
Following on from this, how do I recreate the same settings from 2017 in 2018? I hoped it would import all of this stuff automatically, but it's in it's most basic mode when I go into it. I don't want to have to set it all up again from scratch, so surely there's a more efficient way.

I originally wrote this around the release of SU2017. It's still the method I use.
1. Custom shortcuts: Those get picked up by the new version of SU so that's automatic.
2. Custom materials, styles, components: Those folders from the beginning get put in a place I can quickly access with Open or Create a local collection and Add to favorites. (I never add my own custom materials, styles, or components to SketchUp's own supplied asset folders. They always go in folders I create.)
3. Custom templates: I just save out a blank SketchUp file from the previous version to somewhere I can access quickly. Open that in the new version and use File>Save as template.
4. Extensions/Plugins: I always install fresh copies from their source. This helps to eliminate potential problems due to changes in Ruby or other things that might cause old extensions to fail or throw errors. For me it isn't worth the trouble dealing with the errors if I know I can head them off in the first place. It also gives me an opportunity to do some house cleaning and skip plugins./extensions I don't use anyway. With the Sketchucation Plugin Store tool, it's easy to batch install bundles at least for files available there. The EW also makes it easy to automatically install files.
5. Toolbars: I make a screen shot of the current version showing the toolbars I have active and where they are along with the custom toolbars for the native tools. I import that image into the new SketchUp version as an image and use Zoom Extents to make it fill the drawing space. Then I don't need to look back and forth between SU versions to make sure I have things where I need them.
