TIG 2D Tools Problem
-
I an having severe performance problems with TIG's 2D Tools plugin. Specifically, the problem is with entering or editing 2D text. Sometimes I can enter text and it will go in very quickly, however, many times I get a 5 to 7 minute delay when adding or editing text. During these delays, I get a "Not Responding" message at the top of the SketchUp window. I have not noticed any problems with other aspects of the plugin but honestly, I do not use the other features nearly as often. I do use the 2D text a lot.
I am running SU 2016 Pro & 2017 Pro and it is happening in both versions.

Do you see a similar delay if you use the native 3D Text tool to make 2D text?
-
Honestly have not tried it because I do not have as good of a control over it (at least the way we use the text) but my "gut" feel is no.
-
Why don't you try it?
How do you get better control?
-
OK - I just went and tried it......

First of all, I did not have the same problem with editing the 2D text today. I have fought this a lot over the past several months though. I will try to see if I can isolate it further in the future.

As for the 3D Text tool:
-
You cannot edit 3D text - at least I have not figured out how to do it

The output using the same settings (font, size, color) does not produce the same quality. The text looks entirely different. See example below.
Update: I just had to go update some 2D text in 4 drawings. The problem occurred again in all 4 of the updates (which also included adding some new text). Cannot confirm this but it seems that it happens more consistently when there is more text in the drawing.
When I click to add or update the text, I get a blue spinning wheel icon that is kind of jerky for a while, then it stops the jerking but keeps on spinning. I can also here a little disk churning at the same time as I see the jerky appearance. Then it stops the jerky action, the noise goes away and the icon continues to spin. It kind of looks like it might be internally going through all of the 2D text in the drawing in the background.
I will continue to watch this behavior and see if I can isolate things any better.

I just did some more testing and now have a clue as to what is happening. I has to do with the complexity of other objects in the model.
When I started the testing, I just entered a bunch of 2D text instances. As the number of entries increased, I saw some very minor slow down so I then went and added my normal car wash equipment to the model. With the addition of each piece, particularly more and more complex ones (equipment with many component instances) adding additional text object began to slow down. It started taking even longer to edit existing 2D text instances.
So, it looks like the more complex the model becomes, the longer it takes to both add and edit 2D text instances. It also seems like editing existing instances takes longer than adding additional ones.
Maybe TIG will be able to address this in some way. As I said in my earlier post, I had reached a point where it can take 4 to 7 minutes to edit a 2D text object.
