Dimensioning issue
-
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I've looked and can't find anything. I have a SketchUp model of a cabinet (following along with Dave Richards' video), but rather than putting the dimensions in SketchUp as in the video, I am trying to put them in in LayOut. The top and bottom both have bullnose edges, and I'm assuming that's what is causing my problem picking up the correct points for the side elevation. On the front elevation, I'm assuming a depth issue is why I'm having trouble picking up the points for the stile that is set back from and runs between the top and bottom.
Am I making any sense here? And any help here?
FYI, I've been using SU for a couple of years, less so LayOut. I'm not a carpenter, but I'm interested in learning how to at least be a virtual one.
Thanks!

Hi Linda, very likely you are picking the wrong point on the bull nose for dimensioning. Without seeing the LO file, though, I'm just guessing. When I have to dimension things like that where it would be difficult to pick the right end point as an anchor, I use a temporary guideline placed in the SketchUp model to help guide anchoring the dimension. You'll need to be in Raster or Hybrid rendering for that viewport to be able to see the guideline. Also remember you can zoom in quite closely to where the point is in the viewport. Once you anchor that end of the dimension, zoom back so you can see the other end. If you are using the center mouse wheel for zooming, this is an easy thing to do.
If you need an extra set of eyes on your puzzle, you can either upload it here or send it to me via PM.

Dave,
Thanks so much for your reply. I still couldn't pick up the right points with zooming, but putting temporary guides in in SU worked like a charm. I'm really getting a lot out of your video, by the way, and I've joined Fine Woodworking as a result, but I'm thinking this Sketchucation forum is the best place for me to post questions to you. Am I right about that? Thanks again!

Hi Linda, I'm glad that you were able to work it out. I'm also happy to know that the video is helping you.
As for questions, you can ask here, you can send a PM to me through SCF, you can get to me through fine Woodworking or e-mail me directly. lots of options for getting help with SketchUp and LayOut.
p.s. when I did the video I showed dimensioning in SketchUp because the majority of users in the audience use the free version. I'm glad to know you're working in LayOut. I don't do any dimensioning in SU anymore and removed the Dimension tool from the toolbar to make room for another tool I do use.

Thank you, Dave.
I did know that you use LayOut for dimensioning but that you just showed it in SU for those who don't have the Pro version. LayOut is the primary reason I bought the Pro version. For practice I'll be using more of the models you've so generously shared. You may make a carpenter out of me yet!
