Sections and rotated axis
-
I've been working for some time on a project, a custom home I'm building. Some time ago I oriented the model to its location on Google earth and rotated the drawing axis to the new building axis. But, when I go to make a horizontal section plane, it always is rotated to what I suppose is the original drawing axis, not my rotated axis matching the building orientation on GE. So when I select "align view" by context clicking on the section plane, and camera> parallel projection, my section is rotated off perpendicular to my screen. I am unable to rotate drawing to "square" while keeping the "align view" properly oriented (I'm using the 3D Connexion space thing). Has anyone solved this "problem"?
Thanks in advance!
Bob

I don't know if this problem is related to the section plane or anytime you look for a "plan view" but maybe this plugin will help. [Plugin] (TIG) Rotate Plan View v1.1 20110316

Bobrsta, how did you end up fixing this? I have the same issue with a drawing. I have reviewed the other post, but I guess I'm not big on plug-ins at this point. I'd like to understand how I can rotate a plan section view with native tools.
Anyone explain how?Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Hi folks.
To rotate a Section Plane, try these steps:
1 - Select the Section Plane;
2 - Choose the Rotate Tool;
3 - Rotate it like you do with any other geometry.
The Move Tool works also if you want to move a Section Plane.
Just ideas.

I've rotated my plan view before with this tool. I don't think it is possible in native SketchUp (unless you want to rotate the model itself). That is why a script was developed.

This still stumps me. I am able to select and rotate any section plane other than the plan view section.
Using the tool suggested, I have to know the angle the building is rotated?
I suppose a work around is to design the building as a separate drawing and then insert it into the file with the geo location. It just bothers me that I can't figure this out. It seems like it should be so easy. -
How do you select and rotate any section plane in the same manner you are speaking of? I select a section plane and it does not rotate in the axis normal to the plane. Rotating in other ways doesn't make sense in this context.
Obtaining an orthographic view that is properly rotated to any way you need it should be a part of SketchUp but it's one of those shortcomings. And don't waste time hoping it will improve. You have to buy LayOut so you can rotate a view anyway you want (but without more trickery it will be a rotated rectangular image). Or use the plugin. Pretty easy to know the angle.
I do model buildings in separate files than the site file. It saves a lot of trouble-- all my model is components anyway. Making the whole building a component is natural, but in the end what if you want a certain plan view including the site? Still can't be done unless you rotate the site itself and use the North arrow plugin to change the North direction.
