Hey, for some reason sketchup always forgets this shortcut whenever I set it. It works for a while and then somehow it keeps getting reset. Anyone else have this problem?

What version of SketchUp? What operating system? Please complete your profile with that information.

Love this shortcut - use it all the time. Wish that sketchup didn't distinguish between groups and components within the menu - in other words, if they just named it 'flip along red axis' instead of 'flip group along red axis' and 'flip component along red axis' then maybe the command would work for both groups and components. Don't know quite enough about software development though to know if this is accurate. Guess I could write a plug in that does it? Yeah what the hell maybe I will. As it is, I've had to decide to set it for components and do groups the old fashioned way (right click, ugh)

Why not just make a set of shortcuts for flipping components and another for flipping groups? You also should have a set of shortcuts for flipping selections that contain primitives or multiple components or groups. There are really nine different flipping commands. I have keyboard shortcuts for six of them but didn't bother with ones for flipping groups since I don't use them.

Yes, this differentiation is really annoying. In my opinion there should be one command for each direction and even the same for simple geometry to flip at world axis. Why do we need these separated commands?
I think a plugin would be great if Trimble doesn't manage to get the stuff done.

So with a single flip command independent of what is selected, would you always flip along the model axes? What if you want to flip a component or a group along its axes but the component or group has been rotated relative to the model axes?

Why would i always flip along the model axes? The way it works now is that can't flip a group/component along the world axes. Why wouldn't it be possible to simply combine these functions and based on the selected object type the function switches as it does now, but within one command.
Or it would be even better to have two commands, one for the world coordinate system and one for the local one (group/component) - as it works in other programs like max. But not three different commands for differnt object types.

Flipping along a group or component's axes is fine for flipping a group or component but what axes would you use for flipping primitives? What axis would you use for flipping more than one component or group when one or more of the components have been rotated?

I'm with Dave on this, there are many ways I want to flip geometry depending on its orientation and it's natural for me to know which one it is as I work.

The simplest way I've found to flip a group/component along the world axis is simply to duplicate it, select both, flip them, then delete one.

Like i said above: just the same as it works now, but combined in one function and not three separated. (single groups/components = local coordinates; multiple selections of groups, components, geometry = world coordinates)

The other thing would be two options (world and local) for all selections.

i think, in this case i would prefer the mirror tool πŸ˜„

Nah! The mirror tool is yet another tool. By the time you've remembered what the shortcut is or where the icon is located I've already done it. It's one of those things that takes less time to do than describe...3 seconds, tops. πŸ˜„

my mirror tool shortcut is "M", i use it all the time πŸ˜‰

But yes it is another good way to do it.

Mirror tool + 3 points (sometimes not easy with complex models and the inference engine)
                                      vs
copy/paste in place + select both instances + flip along + select one and delete it
                                      πŸ˜„

i'm still voting for a combined flip tool πŸ˜‰
