Can someone recommend a plugin that gives me a workplane to draw on? It looks like most of the plugins are collections of tools and I've been holding off trying any so far. Does anyone have a favourite that comes with a pretty basic set?

TIG has a work plane plugin. Look in the SCF PluginStore.

I think it is a good idea to hold off on using plugins until you are at least fairly proficient with the native tools. Many people dive in and start hunting for plugins to do what the native tools already do because they haven't taken the time to learn those tools.

I didn't mean to dissuade you from TIG's plugin. I was just affirming you choice to hold off installing plugins. If you just need a surface to draw on, you can certainly draw a large rectangle and make it a component or group. Or maybe you just need the plugin. Or maybe you can use inferencing and don't need the work plane at all. It depends on what you're drawing.

As a further thought, the desire for "work planes" is sometimes due to an attempt to make SketchUp function like other CAD software. As Dave says, you should be free to use SketchUp the way that works best for you, but you should also try to learn and use the way it was designed.
