Orbiting by thumb wheel
-
Hello, i'm now using a Logitech MX Master mouse, I'd be happy to utilize the thumb wheel (it's not a button, just up/down scrolling) to orbit on a fixed axis.
I think it could very comfortable... I tried really hard to config it somehow through windows but without any success, because i can't find how to config the special sketchup mouse mapping and the middle mouse button orbiting feature.anyway, i think this should be open to configuration somehow.
Cheers,
Ohad. -
Looks like these are the only options for the thumbwheel:

•Invert scrolling direction
•Reproduce touch-based gestures
•Adjust scrolling speed and resolution
•Navigate tabbed content
•Switch apps
•Swipe between full screen apps (Mac only)
•Switch between full-screen apps (Windows 8 only)
•Zoom in and out
•Adjust volume
•Control screen brightness
•Display notifications (Mac onlySource: http://www.logitech.com...
Maybe there is a way to hack the mouse with alternative configuration software?
Otherwise how are you getting on with the MX Master? I'm considering it as a replacement for my Performance MX when it eventually dies on me.

I tried through X-Mouse, to combine the middle mouse button + keyboard cursor movements but it didn't work, don't know why...
The main issue is that the thumb wheel is not a button, and also that the orbiting is done by moving the mouse around (which means, moving the cursor), which the thumb wheel won't do, atleast, i couldn't find a way to get it done.
I think it's something that is easy to achieve, i just don't have the programming knowledge to do so.
Also i'm not sure if the mouse orbiting shortcut is programmable through sketchup or it's a dead end. -
I would imagine that it would be very tricky to get the thumbwheel to only control two axes. It isn't just about telling the mouse how to function, but also telling SU to only recognise movement in certain directions.
Maybe it's time to invest in a 3D mouse?

actually i don´t want control over 2 axes, just one axis. (one time to the left, one time to the right). with the mouse middle button wheel and the thumb wheel you can control 2 axes, just like in any window in windows that let you scroll up and down, right and left.
but the middle wheel is already set to do zoom in/zoom out, which I think is important enough to leave it as is. -
The Orbit tool is used heavily when creating and editing models. SketchUp contains a few mouse enhancements and modifier keys to allow easy access to the Orbit tool.

I believe that he is referring to the side-to-side rocking motion of some mouse wheels, a different switch from the down-up wheel press, intended, I suppose, for horizontal scrolling on wide columns. There doesn't seem to be a way to map the panning function to that sideways rocker switch.

Hi-
I have an MX Master mouse connected to my PC, running Win 7. In SketchUp Pro 2015, it works like any other mouse with a index finger wheel. When orbiting, moving the mouse changes the point of view and rotation the wheel zooms in and out. What is different about this mouse is it has a second wheel next to the thumb. SketchUp does accept input from this thumb wheel, that I can figure. In some applications that process flat documents, like Chrome, moving the thumb wheel slides the document left to right. Does anyone know how to get SketchUp to accept input from the thumb wheel?
Thanks.

cometric, I think this thumbweel is just a different design for button4 and button5, it is not "real wheel" so try to customize 4 & 5 buttons behavior.
I have simple 5 button mouse + X-Mouse Button Control. Middle button scroll works for zoom in/out. Pressing middle button works as "Pan" in upper half of the sketchup window and as "Orbit" in lower half of the window.
X-Mouse is excellent application. -
get a 3D spacemouse. You wont regret it.

I would at least be able to lock an axes so I could for example, rotate the view without it dipping or rising as it does at the moment.

NOT tottally sure wot yuou are ALL on about tho there is some hint of programming a mouse to SU that would be nice to no ,,+ my little issue that --if PAN is selected WHEEL BUTTON can ORBIT (IF you have
wheel button) so ,if ORBIT is sellected . wheel button could PAN ,and mine does,nt ,,+ has anyone
usefull knowledge with PROGRAMMABLE MICE and SU ..JON.. -

There is a portable version too.Make a profile for SketchUp for upper half of the window, for "Middle Button" use 'simulated keystroke' and add {SHIFT}{MMB}. This way your mouse middle button will activate PAN in upper half and ORBIT in lower half of SU window. You can assign different key strokes for every quarter of a window if you wish, and even additional strokes for toolbar areas.
My mouse is with side scroll and if I assign different keystrokes for TiltWheelLeft, TiltWheelRight, WheelUp, WheelDown for every quarter + toolbar area I will have 20 different tools activated by middle mouse button (+ pan & orbit & zoom reserved for 'Middle Button' action).
Without side scroll I will have 10 tools/keystrokes + pan & orbit & zoom.
Pretty good for a simple mouse.
Actually I use only few and my side buttons(button4 & button5) are reserved for Undo/Redo in every program I use, but they can be customized same way too.
'X-Mouse Button Control' is useful tool. A lot more can be made with button actions as there are additional options.
