PC hardware - which processor and grahics cards?
-
Finally getting a new PC built. What are your recommendations, warnings etc?
Also do you also use Vectorworks?System will be Windows 7, tower (so no more mobile chip slowness, better cooling etc).
Will have two external monitors, possibly one with new 218ish ppi display.
Hoping to start Twilight, with Thea later on.Work is mainly landscape, so lots of organic objects/high edge counts. Also do a lot of animated model presentation (Joinme).
CAD working environment is Sketchup Pro 8 and Kerkythea, plus Vectorworks 2012. No intention of changing anytime soon as they both work fine.
Only other graphically intense software is ArcGIS & GRASSgis.
Current system is a Toshiba Satellite Pro L500 notebook.
64bit
Intel 2x Duo 2Ghz.
Graphic card is ATI Mobility HD 4500
Ram: 4GB -
All depends on what you want to spend

This setup suits me fine. I am also into landscaping. It gives me enough GPU to run real-time rendering applications but runs very cool. Canadian dollars 1500.

Your budget will be a big deciding factor. Also, have a look at several pages in the hardware sub-section http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=72
In there you will find many related questions and discussions that might be of interest to you. -
@chris: Yes I started a Vray render on one of these in 1983..80286...it's not finished yet.

I like Roland's configuration. I have something similar, it works fine for me too.

Thank you Roland for sound technical advice and to Kristoff for comic relief.

In my practice as an architect I have replaced AutoCad completely with Sketchup Pro and Layout years ago.
Now my pc is getting an upgrade.
This is what I will keep:
- Storage: Samsung HD 1035SJ ATA Device 1TB
- SSD-storage: Samsung SSD 850 Pro 256 GB ATA Device
- Windows 7 Professional
New:
- CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K Boxed
- Motherboard: Asus Republic Of Gamers Z97 MAXIMUS VII GENE
- Video Card: GeForce GTX 980 4GB
- Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tactical BLT2C8G3D1608ET3LX0CEU (2* 8gb = 16gb)
The budget must stay realistic.
Thanks a lot for any thoughts or recomendations.
