I'm experimenting with subdivision modelling, a technique which involves using four-sided faces everywhere that can be sub-divided to make a more complex looking, smoother model

i made a model and imported in 3ds max. the subdividing part went well, but the smoothing is all wrong. can anyone tell me some reliable ways of subdivision modelling? I can upload the skp model if anyone wants to test it

        Are the normals reversed?

Nope, and the normals looked good on import too (i'll double check right now) here's a shot of the skp model if it helps with anything

I'm importing it directly as skp (i'm using 3ds max 2013 trial at the moment).

Is there any plugin that does subdivision?

maybe you need to weld vertices? I think I recall a function in 3dsmax that merges all overlapping vertices.
