Importing a CAD drawing
-
Hi,
I am trying to import a cad drawing but SU keeps crashing.
I've stripped everything out of the CAD drawing that is not needed in order to make the file smaller etc, but it just crashed every time i try import it.
I've also converted the DWG to DWF but that crashes too. Has anyone else experienced this, or can anyone recommend anything to try, thanks in advance.

You should fill in the information in the bug splat window so that the guys at Trimble can have a look at the problem...

Did you try dxf?

Can you import a different CAD file? Maybe there's something wrong with the file you've got.
Here for example is a DXF file I just imported with no trouble into SketchUp on my Mac.
What happens when you try it?

Hi, thanks that imported fine.
I'm using a Mac too. Should i try saving my CAD drawing as something else?
I have several options to choose from in the CAD software i am using.

So that indicates that your installation of SketchUp can import CAD files if they are good files to begin with. Nothing wrong with SketchUp, then.
You wrote that you saved it as a "DWF". Kaas asked if you tried DXF. I assumed you mis-typed. What is your CAD program and what sort of file is it creating? Can you set it to save to an earlier version of DWG or DXF?

A DWF file is a bit like an 'AutoCAD PDF' file, a format that allows others to view, review, or print design information – without these people needing to know AutoCAD or other design software, so no good in SU. I can only suggest saving the drawing as an earlier dxf or dwg format such as 2006 or Release 14 from within AutoCAD.
