Paint Bucket - Material Symbols not working

Hi, I'm trying to hatch in surfaces with diagonal lines material instead of drawing them in my hand. In the Paint bucket tool theres a tab called material symbol, and it has a material that is diagonal lines (lines on a 45 angle). When i click on this and touch the surfaces that I want to have diagonal lines, it colours the whole surface a light shade of grey.
Any ideas why this is happening or how to solve it?
Also I tried clicking any of the materials in the Material Symbols tab and the same problem happened. I also tried putting a brick material on to see what happens and it shows the brick…
